T500 not starting properly

A friend of mine has a T500 that refuses to start properly. We turn it on, can access the bios and stuff, but it will not load an OS. It has the Vista sticker on it but apparently has XP installed (so she says). The web site said to hit the blue button and do a system restore, but that is not an option.

Anyone got any tips?

Run the hard drive diagnostics from BIOS

Does an error appear on boot or does it just hang on the boot screen? Some other screen? BSOD?

It just hangs. Black screen, nothing there.

Boot up a Linux Live CD (or DVD) like Linux Mint. If it boots, chances are your current XP install is borked. While you are at it, give your friend a lecture on the benefits of Linux and leave it installed :).

I'll give that a try, thank you. Was my initial thought too.
