can I add a smart card reader to a T510

#1 Post by abhansali » Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:12 am

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and have a question. I have a T510 (4314-2PU) that has no smart card reader. Can this be added to the laptop? I am savvy to open it up and install something new. I found on the Lenovo support site (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 74345.html) that the smart card module is P/N 60Y5057 and the contactless is P/N 60Y5031. Seems pretty easy to add in. But I don't know if I can just add in this reader, or do I need a different motherboard as well (which would make this a problem). Because next to both these P/Ns it shows 4314-CTO as the supported model, but mine is 4314-2PU. I have Nvidia discrete graphics, AMT and TPM along with FPR and webcam.

Thanks,
Apurva

You'll be fine with just adding the reader- no problem. All boards have a plugin for that reader anyways (otherwise it would make the board just that much more expensive).

Also, if you check the maintenance manual you shouldn't see "Smart Card Reader" as a separate motherboard.

Just say no to the ThinkBook Pro.
