I'd seriously consider this model to replace my T500, but...

--largest HD available on the website is 320GB/7200 rpm. Huh?

--no 9-cell battery available. Huh?

I got an email from Lenovo today about the T420s sale.

Using a T60 at the moment and have been thinking of going T420 route.

I just can't seem to see the main differences between T420 and T420s

Both can be customized to upgrade CPU/display

The diffrence is that you pay a premium for the "s" version to get a slimmer, lighter system. It is like a larger x300. The reason it has the smaller hard drives is that it uses the smaller (7mm?) drives - the higher capacity drives just don't exist.

IMHO, unless you need the absolute smallest and lightest 14" laptop on the market, go for the T420 - better battery life (can't use bay batteries though), and a lower price.

So looks like I should get the T420 and customize to my need.

Minimum 2GB ram , min hd then upgrade myself.
max screen, cpu

I haven't looked into buying a new thinkpad since 2006 so I don't know if this is a good time to buy and what are the best buys these days.

When having both models equipped with batteries to match the same battery life, there is almost no difference in weight. The s model is slimmer.

I am loving my T420s. Replaced the 128 SSD with the 160 IBM SSD and added another 4gb RAM for 8gb total and have not looked back.

Not too worried about battery life as I would never use over a few hours on battery and that is rare. 14" is just fine for me and I moved back from a W520! The 420s runs COOL! Bottom hardly get warm and fan sound is no existent!
