Is this supposed to happen?

I have a Thinkpad t510 with intel centrino ultimate 6300 wireless card. Every time I wake up the computer from sleep it takes at least 1-2 minutes for the wireless to turn on. On other computers I haven't seen this; they resume everything instantly. Do I have a problem or is my hardware/software supposed to function like this?

It shouldn't do that. Is this recent behavior or has it always been like this?

I got this computer in October (before Optimus ) and I only started putting it to sleep about a month ago, which is when I noticed the problem. I also had to replace the hard drive in November because the one it shipped with was bad.

Also, could a mod please move this to the "Thinkpad - General HARDWARE/SOFTWARE questions" forum? I didn't see this one...

In the month or so that I have had this problem, yes I have turned off the computer.

There was a driver update since I began to experience the problem. It did not help much.

It's nvidia's new switchable graphics. Basically it uses whatever integrated graphics you have until it detects that something needs 3d graphics, in which case it turns on the dedicated GPU and begins using it without the user even noticing. It's supposed to combine on-demand powerful graphics when you need it and long battery life when you need that. Around november or december (I think) Lenovo started making t410 and t510 (and others) models that had the nvidia gpu with optimus enabled.

Try uninstalling the drivers completely and reinstalling the latest 14.00.1000 from the Lenovo site.

OK I uninstalled the drivers:
1. I went to device manager and removed the wireless adapter (delete driver checked)
2. I uninstalled intel PRO set wireless thing
3. I uninstalled thinkpad wireless lan utility

Then I went to Lenovo site (via ethernet) and downloaded the driver for my card. It installed the PRO set thing again and it works fine in Windows (havent checked for the original problem yet). However, I cannot get it to work in Access Connections. When I press fn + f5, the wireless radio is there as off, but I cannot power it on. I also cannot connect to any wireless network.

uhmm, i hate to suggest more reloading of utilities, BUT have you considered updating or reloading access connections..?

After removing and installing access connections, my wireless completely works. Now to remake those profiles .

Also, my wireless takes about 20 seconds to start up now. It is a huge reduction, but it still feels like a lot. Is this how it should be?

No. The 6300 should only take a couple seconds at most to start noticing AP beacons, and a few seconds past that to associate (although it can take more depending on conditions).

OK I uninstalled Access Connections again just for fun and it looks like my wireless turns on instantly now. Looks like I'm not using that anymore.

I have a T410 with a the 6200 Advanced and I had a similar problem I think.
Sometimes when I woke up my computer from sleep mode the wireless wouldn't be enabled. I never waited (not even 1-2 minutes) for it to turn on itself, I turned it back on myself.

I fixed the problem by going to the Device manager, and under your network card go to the Power Manager tab and turn off the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox.

It seems to have worked for me.
