T410 System Recovery Discs Failure

#1 Post by drs » Thu Jun 09, 2011 2:51 pm

I tried to create system recovery discs for my T410. The process went very very slowly, until it hung. Basically, I created a CD to boot, and after the first DVD (are there more? I have no idea) was 100% verified, it stopped doing anything. I waited a half hour, and it continued to do nothing other than say 100% verified. I tried to cancel, and it did not respond. I finally killed the process through the task manager.

Anyhow, at this point, if I put in the DVD, it says that there are three files on the disc, and one waiting to be written. The one waiting to be written (desktop.ini) shows, in the win7 preview pain:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21815

and can be opened with Notepad. The system will not allow me to make another set. So, are these OK, is this fixable? Can I get some more somewhere? And, more to the point, is there anything likable about Windows 7? Part of me thinks that the recover discs are a non-issue as I should just put Linux on this, and run XP in a VM for when I need it. But a bigger part wants to be sure that I can still sell this thing and Windows 7 recovery discs are probably a good thing to have.

If you recovery the system using the recovery partition (Thinkvantage button on boot then recover to factory defaults) you can create another CD set. I don't know of a way to repair a set that is not correct. The only way to test them is to try them ;).
