T420s and the Windows Experience Index

#1 Post by Yves_ » Tue Jun 28, 2011 1:32 pm

Hello everybody,

I am a proud owner of a new Thinkpad T420s. I really love the device. I had a X-Series fetish befor (X60, X61, X200, X201, X220) but thought the T420s would be better for me. Because of the Big Screen and even better specifications like (NVS4200m and a UltraBay).

Now the specs of my fully loaded T420s are:

- 2.7GHz i7 2nd Gen.
- 8GB RAM (2x 4GB 1333)
- NVidia Optimus (Intel 3000HD + NVS4200m)
- OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS 240GB fitted into the 7mm internal HDD Spot

Now the confusing part... if I do a Windows Experience Index Benchmark... I get:

Processor - > 7.1
RAM -> 7.5
Desktop Graphics ->5.1 ????
Gaming Graphics -> 6.5
Harddisk -> 7.9

5.1 is really low for this configuration I think... I check online and found this http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Dell- ... 628.0.html also 2.7GHz also NVS4200m but scored 6.4 in Desktop Graphics... Am I missing something?

Maybe something I did wrong? If someone has an Idea. I would welcome it :)

Thanks guys

Cheers
Yves

Considering I get 5.9 with my integrated graphics... yes.

I actually had to re-run it a second time to get the best score. Boot it up, make sure everything is done loading and close out of everything then go to advanced tools (it's a link on the WEI page) and go to "Clear all Windows Experience Index scores and re-rate the system".

Make sure the Optimus is set to the NVS4200m and not the Intel GPU when you run the index.

Are you using a 90W power supply?

Hi guys,

thanks for the many replies.

@visionviper: I did that I cleared all scores and re-rated the system... still 5.1 :(

@Harryc: I disabled Optimus in Bios set to the dedicated Graphics chip... so it can only run the NVS4200m... still 5.1 :(

@bill bolton: ehm... no i am using a 65W. Why? Does it matter?

Cheers

On some X220 models with an i7 and 8GB of RAM it does appear to matter in terms of the Desktop Graphics scoring by EI, so if you have a 90W supply available, you might want to try rerunning the EI scoring using that.

That seems wrong. I get 6.3 on both graphics scores on my T500 with the Radeon HD3650. All the benchmarks I see comparing have the NVS4200 being superior to the 3650.

I would be curious to see if that is the "real" score since I am thinking about upgrading to a T420s switchable.

@Nubulin: That is excatly what I thought too... I will try the 90W and will get back to you.

Btw. here is something I also saw. I dont know if it matteres... but the 2D Desktop only has 270MHz Clock... :-S

Try using GPUTool to see if you can force it to 3D clocks.

Okay, I now attached a 170W Powersupply from a W520 to my T420s and still not more than 5.1 in 2D Graphics on the WEI... can that be possible?

Is there something wrong with my notebook?

Cheers,
Yves
