T410 with Win 7 shuts down unexpectedly, then restarts. PIC

#1 Post by Tim M » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:03 pm

I can find no correlation to a particular program or process, and this issue has only happened 4-5 times since purchasing the computer at the beginning of the year. However, it has happened twice in the last 1-2 weeks, and it has been very warm weather lately. The Event Log doesn't show anything useful, as the computer apparently shuts down without throwing any sort of error code.

I've searched quite a bit online, and haven't turned up anything definitive. Some information suggests it might be a video driver issue (I have an NVIDIA card in addition to the Intel integrated graphics).

After the restart, I ran CPUID Hardware Monitor, which showed normal system temperatures. I few moments later, I saw the below (CPU temps slightly elevated as I was running Windows Defender at that time).

Image

Hardware Monitor now doesn't report any data for the NVIDIA card, but I doubt that it overheated and blew up, as I can switch to using the NVIDIA card without a problem!

Any thoughts? If it's a software issue, I'm less concerned as hopefully there'll be a workaround or patch made available. If it's likely a hardware issue, I'll need to send it in.

As I suspected, this is not real. I currently have the comp defaulted to using the Intel GPU. When I switch to the NVIDIA GPU, normal temperatures are reported. When I switch away from the NVIDIA, I get the 255 C value, which must be some error value because the GPU and its sensor are not active.

ausmike, can you provide any links to further discussion of the GPU issue? I know it was a big problem with the T4x line, but couldn't find anything about the T41x line apart from this: T410S Overheating with an external monitor (though I have a 410, not a 410s). I think my next step will be reinstalling the video drivers and seeing if that helps.

OK, uninstalled the NVIDIA drivers, but how do I reinstall them? I downloaded Lenovo's driver package, and get the error that compatible hardware is not found on the system (yes, I downloaded the correct package). I've tried Win Safe Mode, or regular mode with the BIOS forced to use the discrete graphics.

I'm at a loss? How am I supposed to install the drivers?

EDIT: I had indeed downloaded the wrong package (for the NVIDIA discrete graphics only, not for the switchable graphics). I obtained the correct package and installed; all seems to be working right now.

Fingers crossed to see if this solves the shutdown issue.

..........kinda long story ,,, my ranks for t410 SW graphiscs issue .... like the user above

have a t410 (with SW Graphics crd) and often i boot with High Graphics and never use the 'intel card' . Often the laptop would reboot ...without any notice and no DUMP FILE.......

had Lenovo Service call logged - they told me HOME SERVUCE Man can come to the house and repair the laptop!! wow ,, free home service!!!

So the guy come , opens up whole laptop - things al over the table!! so he rplaces the SYSTEM Board and puts things back. AND with 4 screws LEFT OVER!! so I asked him 'what to do with those?" he replied > oh its ok laptop bts up SEE no problems....
So i use it for an HOUR and laptop suddenly SHUTS DOWN pooof !! and dont bootup! , So I call lenovo support - go thru all the past repair events and get SAME GUY BACK next day. needless to say he wsnt happy and make comments - am too fussy etc etc ,, and NEW SYSTEM BAORD again ,, and I give him the 3 SPARE screws and he finshes , and now HAS 2 SPARE ONES this time!! laptop boots up and I sue for 3 hrs ,,, and pooof ! ,, not able to boot again ,,,,, Call tech support , this time I take not so nice attitude ,,, and say FIX IT ! or give me NEW ONE !
Sent alptop to depot repair. They reeeive it and put aside , as they cannt work on someone elses '[censored] work'.... so it takes LENOVO a week to sort out WHO did what and WHO is to fix other pples MISTAKES in assembly....So I am overseas and than lenovo use that as excuse ,,, "customer didnt reply to VM" and leave it in depot for another week!!
long story short ,,,,,,,,,,, Depot still have my laptop ( 4 weeks ) ETA = planned delivery date of july 29th dur to :
crushed antenna cable
fan assemb. not working
etc etc

...so now I am still waiting for my laptop to be deleivered ( ETA july 29th) ,,, for this issues of SHT DWN due to ATI graph card not working right

After "living with" this issue for quite a while, I finally think I've narrowed it down. I started getting a fan error on occasion, and after installing Hardware Monitor, noticed that the CPU temp was rising significantly during heavy load. Thus, I think I have been experiencing thermal shutdowns, which would explain the lack of any Win 7 error logs.

I have a NOS revised fan on hand, but have yet to install it (waiting for the old one to fail completely to justify the amount of time/disassembly required for the replacement.

And when you do (sooner rather than later!), don't forget to clean off the old, and apply new thermal paste (preferably AS5).

Hope the fan replacement solves your problems.

I have to say that 225c reading for the Nvidia GPU made my jaw drop. Glad it's not the actual temp.

If it were, things would be pretty exciting, though!

And I still have a syringe of Arctic Silver 5 kicking around which I'll use for the fan replacement. Used that stuff for two fan replacements on my T42 and it worked great.

I have been using AS for years. Works great.

Although I have been hearing that the cermaque stuff from the same company works even better. So I am going to buy a tube of that next time I need to order some stuff.
