t420 and the microphone jack

I just got a new thinkpad t420 to replace my 6 year old t43....

I really like the computer except for the fact i wonder why there is a 1393 port(firewire is it) instead of a faxmodem like my old one had. I remember apple pushing firewire when they first came out with the ipods and that fell by the wayside. Given these computers are sold all over the world, i cant imagine that there isn't still a need. In my case, i used the one on my t43 to send faxes from my application.

anyway... i noticed that this computer does not have a headphone and mic jack. I would like to be able to do some audio recordings onto the hard drive as i was able to do with my t43.
I understand that the one jack is a mic and headphone jack.

if it is true, can someone tell me how to get it to work? I can't figure out how to . I plug my y adapter into it and it cuts off the speakers.

thanks for any help

otherwise this is a great computer.. I do love thinkpad t series!

You need a special kind of combo jack adapter. The one that comes with most smartphones.

combo headset adapter or a USB microphone are the two options with the new setup. The loss of the modem in the newest Thinkpads is not at all surprising but a little sad because I did occasionally send/receive faxes via landlines using the modem on my T400. Yes, there are online fax options, but they all generally cost more money than using your own landline and are not IMO suitable for sending sensitive/confidential material.
