T400 Screen Has a Red Tint

Hi,

Upon starting up the screen becomes very red which gradually goes away after the computer has been running for a while. It sometimes persists in the lower left corner. what can i do to fix it? If i need to buy a new part(s) please let me know what and provide a link. Thanks

You need a new LCD. The CCFL backlight is the problem.

right, but i have no idea what type of LCD to get (if there are many) etc. where can i get one that would meet my needs. what to look out for. etc. im a complete novice when it comes to this

Start by posting the machine type/model number from the sticker on the bottom of the Thinkpad. It is a (7) digit alpha-numeric .e.g. 7647-3CU.
Is this machine still under warranty?

not under warranty. not that im aware of at least. unless it has life time (i didnt purchase any warranty and i dunno what the default is, if any). had this laptop for 2 years

Plug your machine type and serial number into this link to check your warranty. While on that page click on parts lookup and post the LCD FRU#.

i cant find the serial key. not sure if im looking for 7 or 12 digit number. also i think it may have been worn off? or maybe the form didnt like my format? for machine type is T400 acceptable?

No, the machine type will be 2764. The serial number is a 7 digit number found on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop. .e.g. L3-745234

all right i did that. and i found what i think you described

14.1 inch WXGA+ (1440x900) LCD service parts - ThinkPad T400 and R400

so theres like Service part number (FRU) and CRU ID.

i assume these are individual parts i can buy. if so which one is the one I need?

For WXGA+ I would stick with an LG panel. That would be FRU# 42T0579. Here is a recommended source -

Note: Disregard the machine type. T61 CCFL LCD's are the same as those in T400's.
