Moveing some parts from T61 to T400 - which one ?

Hello there.

Recently my T61 died (cause of nVidia GPU failure). Repair is to expensive so I decide to buy a T400, not new of'course.
I bougth T400, type 2768-CT7, my T61 type is 7664-1KU.
THe T400 has about 7 months warranty left, 1280x800 LCD panel, not US keyboard, and palm rest without fingerprint reader.
I have read that keyboard is interchangable, LCD panel not in all cases but I think in my case it can be moved, and I'm not sure about palm rest (in my T61 there is with fingerprint).

Can I move the palm rest from T61 to T400?
What about a warranty when I move LCD, palm rest and/or keyboard?

Thx for any answers. ;D

LCD panel yes, keyboard yes, Palm rest no. Warranty...no impact unless the LCD fails. Keep the old one. The other parts are customer replaceable.

The problem with palm rest is there is no connector on T400 mobo or it's not compatible at all?

It's just not designed the same....screw holes would not line up, etc. Both boards would have a connector. Don't know if the connector is the same, but isn't that irrelevant if the parts do not match?.

I wasn't sure about palm rest, now I'm.

What about warranty, will I lose it?

Great, thx for all replays. ;D

The LCD (T61, 1440x900) has about 9 months, it was changed at the end of warranty, so it's almost new. ;)
Now I need to find out how to change an LCD panel. ;)

www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/R61_T61 has some very well done traininig videos which explain how to disassemble, and later reassemble the screen. There are also links to the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) available from the main menu, which exactly shows which screw goes where.

I'm not sure about changeing my LCD panel.
Field Replaceable Units are those parts expected to be replaced by a Lenovo authorized service technician. Only Lenovo authorized service technicians may perform these steps under warranty. Customers servicing their machines to Customer Replaceable Unit level are asked to follow the CRU Removals/Replacements section of this training package. Unauthorized service may void product warranty.
So I need to contact a Lenovo service. I'm hope it will not cost a lot. O_o

If your machine is still covered by a warranty, this would be your best bet anyway, although i doubt that they will do anything that is not related to the original machine's part delivery. When i had to send in a T61 for mainboard replacement under warranty due to the infamous nVIDIA bug, i insisted to rather put in an Intel based mainboard instead of a nVIDA based one, but which they openly refused based on these very grounds. Assuming you succeed, supposedly Lenovo will be happy enough to charge you a large enough amount of money which would have sufficed to buy a good used replacement T400.

For this reason alone, lots of people (me involved) prefer to do all the FRU replacements themselves, unless a still valid warranty would be put to risk. Thinkpads were build for being serviceable, and thus can be easily dis- and reassembled given proper documentation, which can be had at the aforementioned lenovoservicetraining website.

If your question is if a T400 1280x800 LCD panel is upgradeable, the answer is yes. The upgrade is to a 1440x900 panel. The current LCD in your T61 is a 1440x900 panel.

If you have an LED backlight, you can only replace with LED backlight panel. T61 is always CCDF. T400 can be CCFL or LED

The LCD panel from T400 is probably not LED cause there is no info about it on page after checking this notebook by Type. Next thing is about LCD cable assembly. In T61 it is different than in T400. But the T61 LCD panel should fit to cable assembly from T61. What do U think about it?

I can change it by myself, but I'm afraid that my warranty will gone.
The worst thing is that none of service providers, I had contacted, didn't replay on my question.
Lenovo service in Poland is really bad.
