Hi,
I ordered a new thinkpad t420 from lenovo website a couple of days ago... i always stream HD videos, play online games, using the internet in a crowded area and my wi-fi (Thinkpad bgn 1 x 1) seems to function on basic use... I was wondering if i can upgrade it to Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300... (3 x 3)
thanx!

Any one of these would work fine -
Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 (Puma Peak) 3×3 AGN
Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205 (Taylor Peak) 2×2 AGN
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000 (Condor Peak) 1×2 BGN
ThinkPad BGN* (RealTek® – Stockton) 1×1 BGN

do i have to upgrade the antenna coz i read from somewhere that ( 1 x 1 ) means 1 radio and 1 antenna so if i want to upgrade to Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 (Puma Peak) 3×3 AGN do i have to upgrade the antenna or is just inside the laptop...
thanx

You will need (3) antennas, therefor you'll have to check to see if they are there or not.

Well i can tell you that in my buddys T420s that came with the low end Thinkpad b/g/n 1x1 card , does have the 3 antenna wires in the system.
The Thinkpad b/g/n 1x1 card uses 2 of them and the 3rd antenna is there not in use.
Guessing it should be the same for the bigger T420.

Does the Wifi Card has to be Lenovo branded for it to work? Is it difficult to edit the BIOS to get the card to work if you don't have a Lenovo branded one?
Common online hardware stores like Newegg and NCIX sell this card for a reasonable price. I don't feel like ordering the Lenovo branded card from China.

thanx guys....
@synthsalot i think you don`t have to buy the lenovo branded one coz most of them are from intel but i advice you to stick on the ones that are listed in the customization... check this for thinkpad T420

Really? I heard the BIOS rejects any non-Lenovo branded card even if Lenovo sells the laptop with the same card. So you if take out an Intel 6300 card out of an Acer or Dell laptop and put it in the T420 it will be rejected by the BIOS because it doesn't carry the Lenovo name even though the T420 is technically compatible with the 6300.

I'll buy that card from you if you get it upgraded.
