New ThinkPad T520 and need help with hibernate mode

Just purchased a new TP T520 (i7, 8 gb ram, 500 gb disk, docking station) and love it. But when I've used the Windows Hibernate option (Start/Shutdown/Hibernate) and then come back and get the TP out of my bag a few hours later the battery is almost dead. It seems to not really be turning off as I've experianced with other laptops in the past (vs. sleep mode). I've checked all of the power settings and can't find anything that seems to address this. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

There was a similar issue with the ThinkPad T61 running Vista, but not as grave. The battery charge would diminish a few percentage points when the notebook was hibernated for a few hours. One user suspected that there might be a driver problem with one of the notebook's components, so he or she disabled one device at a time in Windows Device Manager, hibernated and checked whether disabling that device would prevent battery drain. By trial and error he or she found, that the HD audio controller drew power during hibernation. Microsoft supplied a hotfix for the problem.

If the notebook doesn't have the latest BIOS version, flash the latest BIOS. If you haven't done it already, run Windows Update, upgrade to Microsoft Update. Use Microsoft Update to check for and install updates. Also run ThinkVantage System Update and let it show you what new drivers are available. Update drivers with ThinkVantage System Update or manually. Such a problem could probably be caused by any driver.

If updating Windows and Lenovo drivers doesn't solve the problem, you might want to try to isolate the problem using the method described above, and then ask the supplier of the driver, be it Microsoft or Lenovo, for a solution. If you manage to identify a faulty driver, and the responsible party won't or can't fix the problem, you could install Vista and check whether the problem persists there.

In case you should decide to switch to Vista, here is a link to the knowledge base article on Microsoft's site that deals with the similar problem in Vista:

I reviwed more settings and disabled the wake timers that were turned on for the Ethernet and wifi connections. I tested and now it seems to shutoff completely. thanks for the help.

Lolajoan, its been a while since I did this, but here is what I remember doing:

Win 7: Open Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections. Click on the properties for each of your active network connections (LAN and Wifi). for each one, click on configure and then I turned off all of the "wake on..." options under both the Advanced and Power Mgt tabs. Reboot and you should be good to go.

I've turned the wake on lan off in BIOS. I've also turn off a few other features, such as fingerprint reader and modem as I don't use those. Check the BIOS there might be something there.

I also have problems with power functions.....

When i put the T520i into sleep, and next morning wake it up, it almost is like starting from the scratch...but not quite, as it tells during the boot-up, that it's resuming Windows, and the programs that were open are also resuming.

The power adapter is plugged, battery is 100%. For short period (up to 1-2 hours) it stays in normal sleep and wakes up with Fn-key. I put it into sleep with Fn+F4.

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64-bit version
