Lenovo Recovery - recover space?

#1 Post by markgca » Sat Oct 01, 2011 2:26 pm

i created the recovery media for my t420s

any reason now i shouldnt recover the drive space? is there any way to make another copy of the media, or restore from this partition? or once you make the media thats it.

thanks,

I would highly suggest you leave it alone. The "hidden" partition where the recovery software resides is not that large, and if you need to use it, the speed and ease of recovery is far greater than when one uses the recovery media you have created. The recovery media is largely used if you must replace the hard drive due to complete failure.

That said if you are so strapped for room and truly need the space or are convinced you're better off removing the partition there are a variety of tools you can use to wipe the drive and re-install from the recovery media or whatever approach you choose to take.

One free way is to Google "GParted" it's an open source partition utility that you can burn to disc and use for the job. It helps a lot if you have experience with partitioning, otherwise you may find yourself quite frustrated and wishing you left your computer as is.

im not sure we are talking about the same thing.

the recovery partition that came with my t40 was hidden, and allowed for restore.
but the one on this t420s isnt hidden, and now that i burned the dvd's, it isnt at all clear i can restore from it again.

thats my question; if i CAN restore from it, i'll leave it alone. but if not, it does.
and there is a built in utility for recovering the space, so i dont need to use gparted etc.

thanks,

mark

You can restore from it. I don't believe we are allowed to discuss methods of creating extra restore media here, but you should only need one as a backup to your R&R partition. You can remove the drive letter from the partition, hiding it from view, using Windows disk management.

Your system should have come with documentation that explains this. You can launch Rescue & Recovery using the blue ThinkVantage button during startup.
