T420 memory upgrade problem

#1 Post by newguy2010 » Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:58 am

Hi,

I have this weird problem. I recently upgraded the Ram from single 4GB to 8GB, using another single 4GB Kingston ram. But After that I can't even watch a full movie. My laptop restarts every 40 minutes. I have checked the system and it displayed 8GB(7.96GB used), I have also used the ThinkVantage tool to do a memory test. The test results told me I have two types of ram, one is Micron, which is 4GB and the other is 4GB Kingston. All the tests in the ThinkVantage tool passed. But when I tried to run Memtest it failed and restarted again.

Is it possible that the memory upgrade causes my system to restart? My Laptop's spec is:

i5-2410M, 64bit Win 7 HP, 4 + 4 GB ram, 160GB Intel SSD.

The system is new. I have never installed anything on it after I got it except for a windows media player classic and some media codecs.

Please help. Thank you.

Sounds like you may have faulty RAM. Is it the correct type? Does it have the same timings as the original DIMM?
