How much is supported?

I have a T410, i5 processor, and 2GB of RAM.
I've noticed RAM seems to be a lot cheaper than when I bought some in the past so intend to throw a few more GB in.
However, I'm now confused on what is the maximum supported amount for my system. I always remembered that 32bit windows only supported 3.5GB (ish) but anything over that could be utilised by the integrated graphics. Lenovo state that my machine will support a maximum of 8GB, is this true? Can my system handle 8GB of RAM? Is there any point, will the system only be able to use 3.5GB and then the rest would be overkill for the integrated graphics?
Cheers.
