I see in the specs for the current L420/L520 series that an mSATA SSD drive can be installed in WWAN slot. Is this also the case for the older SL410 model?

I don't know off the top of my head whether the SL410 has an extra miniPCI slot for a mSATA drive, but only the newer Sandy Bridge machines can use it as a boot drive if that's your intent.

RATS! Looks like you're right. Doesn't look like the SL410 even has a second mini PCI Express slot. Guess I'm stuck with using SSD as my only hard drive.
Thanks!

You might want to look at the Momentus XT. It's a platter based hard drive with a flash drive attached for better performance. The older models have 4GB of flash memory while the newer ones have 8GB. Once they figure out your usage patterns, they give near SSD performance. Plus you've still got a fairly good amount of space left over on the platter drive. They're kind of pricey right now due to the flooding in Thailand, but if you can wait it out, they should get more reasonable in the future.
