New factory-sealed L440 with battery at 0%; laptop thinks it's not genuine

I bought a new, factory-sealed L440 that apparently was sitting around a while, because the (genuine!) battery it came with is listed in Windows as having 0% charge. The boot up splash screen, and Thinkvantage Power manager also say that it is not genuine, and that it was "completely discharged and may take up to 10 hours to recharge."

Although Power Manager and Windows both say that the battery is "charging," I am worried that actually it is not charging because after an hour it is still at 0%, and Power Manager lists the charge completion time as 0:00. I'd like to get the laptop to realize that the battery is actually genuine (it came with the laptop in the Lenovo sealed box and has all the right markings). On another board it was recommended to remove battery and ac power, hold down power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect battery and ac, and load bios defaults. I did all of these things to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

(It doesn't help that there is no charging indicator light on the L440. Also, after being a Thinkpad fan for decades I am ready to give up, having bad luck with my last two Thinkpads. This was supposed to be a gift for my wife which leaves me extra steamed. Thanks.)

What version of Power manager is installed?
