SL400: Two Free mPCIe Slots

#1 Post by Imperatrix » Sun Jan 01, 2017 9:14 pm

Hey guys, I hope you are all enjoying your new year's!

I got two mPCIe slots free, both the WWAN and the Turbo Memory slots open respectively, and would like to do something with them. Yes, I'm aware that they're USB type mPCIe ports so mSATA cards are out of the question, but are there any similar alternatives? (Unless there's some adapter I can pull off the mSATA plan)

Well, fellow Thinkpadder flyingfishfinger managed to put a SATA card into his X61: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ta#p698297
He also was able to put in a USB 3.0 card.

Of course, such degree of hacking was necessary for the X61 as it didn't have an Expresscard slot.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Hi! Sorry for the late response! I read through the whole thread and it is quite the interesting read! It's a little too ambitious for my taste, however. I was also looking at something like this as well:

What's your opinion on it?

Might be useful in a few scenarios:

1. you already have a 60GB SATA SSD and realize that you need a bit more space
2. Installing Linux without needing to reformat/repartition your hard drive

I don't know how well it fares in terms of performance (and longevity) though.

All of my T400's and T500's have at least one of those type cards in them. Typically with dual 32 gig cards. Movies or Music fills most of them.
