My volume & Fn brightness OSD have vanished.

#1 Post by mixxo » Wed Mar 04, 2009 3:59 pm

This happened last week too. I went to Lenovo Care for an update check and there was a HotKey update which I installed and all was well again.

This morning the OSD disappeared again. Not much help on Lenovo's board yet and was wondering if anyone here can help me restore this function. I realize it's not a major "big" deal but, very annoying not knowing why it goes away and not being able to get it back. :(

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

That´s why one should be careful with updates. If there aren´t any issues, updating the system could not make it better ;) If you are sure you updated only the hotkey driver, the manually reinstalling it should fix the problem. For this purpose go to Lenovo website -> support and download the hotkey/OSD driver. Uninstall the current one, reboot, run the .exe, it will only unpack the driver installer on C:\Drivers\Something (note exact location before starting the unpacking), go to that folder and run setup.exe, reboot. Now, it should work. If it doesn´t, return for more detailed instructions :)

Hi Marin, thanks for your reply. Maybe 'm not doing something right. I've got 2, 3 and four copies of the same drivers downloaded. Cannot find installations instructions anywhere.

I uninstalled what I thought were the correct programs/drivers, evidently they weren't the correct ones. When I go to (what I think) is the correct folder - C:\program files\Lenovo\hotkey - there are so many .exe files, I don't know which one to open. So I opened every one of them to no avail .....no OSD yet.

Maybe I'm not going to the right place ....I don't know.

Under "uninstall or change a program" you only need to uninstall Lenovo Hotkey driver. I guess you have already done this. Yup, that´s btw the correct folder, from there you only have to run setup.exe and then reboot. If this doesn´t solve your problem, then you will probably have to go through a slightly longer list of things to reinstall.

EDIT: BTW, it´s a good idea to add a thumbnail warning to the thread name ;)

Well, somehow I got it back, even with a customized color, font, size and all.

Not exactly sure which of the changes resulted in the success but, I'll take it anyway.

Sorry for the unannounced thumbnail, I wasn't aware of the "rule."

Thanks again Marin
