Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Details about current SL Thinkpad systems can be found here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/slbook.pdf
The SL500 is now considered a withdrawn system and therefore can be found here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/lslwbook.pdf

The SL500 takes only DDR2 PC2-5300 (or faster) modules. There are two slots available. You can find instructions on how to remove/replace them here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 69929.html (Hardware Maintenance Manual)

Generally you can install "faster" RAM into a Thinkpad but the laptop will not increase the system speed to take advantage of the module's capability. As long as you stick with PC2-5300 and don't put in slower (i.e., PC2-4200) memory, you will be fine.
