Is this real ThinkPad R400?

#1 Post by shahzodkudratov » Sun Jun 02, 2019 10:31 am

Hello everyone!
I am newbie and my English is bad(sorry).
Few hours ago I bought used ThinkPad R400.

Windows 7 dxdiag: https://www.ultraimg.com/image/Zmdp

I noticed that it has Intel Core2 Duo P8700 CPU, but it is not listed here: https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R400 . I want to replace BIOS with libreboot and in official page(https://libreboot.org/docs/install/r400_external.html) writes:
ThinkWiki has a list of CPUs for this system. The Core 2 Duo P8400 and P8600 are believed to work in libreboot. The Core 2 Duo T9600 was confirmed to work, so the T9400 probably also works. The Core 2 Duo T5870/5670 and Celeron M 575/585 are untested!
but there is nothing about P8700.

The battery was totally dead. I found this one on Amazon: 33+ ... R400 Laptop Battery Compatible IBM Lenovo Thinkpad 14" Widescreen Notebook ... 10.8V 5.2Ah/57Wh
Is it ok that current battery "NOM 14.4V 2.6AH 38WH" and new one 10.8V 5.2AH 57WH???

And also looked for new US layout keyboard on Amazon: Eathtek Replacement Keyboard for IBM Thinkpad ... R400 ... Series Black US Layout

Welcome to the forum!

Don't worry about the CPU not being listed on thinkwiki, not every option for every ThinkPad that came out of IBM/Lenovo can be found there.

The battery that you've found is a third party generic battery, and I usually advise against using them. Having said that, if that's your only viable option, go for it.

As for the keyboard, it doesn't seem to be genuine Lenovo product either. Post a WTB (want to buy) ad in the forum's Marketplace and pick out a real one, preferably from 60/61 series that don't sport a "swiss cheese" back panel.

Happy ThinkPadding!

ajkula66, thank you for reply.
Are these batteries from lenovo store ok? https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessorie ... ABatteries or you advise another "valid" store/manufacturer?

UPD: Found another on newegg from IBM: https://www.newegg.com/p/16J-004C-001M5 ... -_-Product

These batteries seem very pricey...I would think twice before I'd decide more on the battery than the whole machine is worth, but that's me...

Does eBay work for you as an option ? I haven't looked for this particular item, but am reasonably certain that there's got to be something there...

If you don't mind me asking, what is a "Swiss cheese back panel"?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
