I just bought an R500 model 2718WHY which has solid specs save one. The processor is a Celeron M 585 and the benchmarks I see published are pretty low for that chip compared to any Core-2-Dou. I got the machine for $430 new and can't justify a lot of expense in upgrading it. The Core-2-Duo E7500 is 3 times faster and can be bought for around $100 on ebay. But I have found no R400 or R500 models that come with that CPU. Lots of P8000 and T9000 series chips that cost a lot more. Anyone know if the E7500 will work in this model?

That's because the E7500 is a desktop CPU. Your best option is most likely the P8400. That'll probably run you $100 on eBay.

There're a lot of T and P series CPUs on eBay. I have upgraded the T9400 2.53 GHz CPU in my T500 to be the T9900 3.06 GHz. Check your Hardware Maintenance Manual for reference. It took me less than two hours to complete the disassembly, thermal paste application, and reassembly.
