The touchpad and control stick on the laptop will periodically stop working. An external mouse works perfectly fine however.

I've downloaded latest Thinkpad Ultranav Drivers & utility programs, and the problem resurfaced.

did you uninstall all old drivers, reboot and then install the latest drivers ??? that helps sometimes ..
