Jumping Thinkpads

#1 Post by taichi » Fri Apr 06, 2018 8:22 pm

My T60P's motherboard has gone squirrely , and putting a newer and better MB costs...

So I can get a W700 at a very good price. It has the Quadro 2700m, but I happen to have a new Lenovo 3700M at hand.

Will I miss my SIPS WUXGA?

Stupid Question Warning:
Would it be possible to swap drives, given the family connection? I'm 99% sure you can't, but...

So since I can't, I'd copy all my files to a big flash drive, and install my Win 7 Ultimate on the W700. How do I decommission the OS on the T60P, so that I can load it on the W700?

Thanks

1) Get your hands on that beautiful TN panel and I guarantee you that the IPS will be nothing of a loss compared to the BRIGHT, VIVID COLORS AND MORE ROOM AND PIXELS!

2)Why can't you swap drives, they are both C2D based systems running SATA drives. Plug and play, and make sure the BIOS config lines up. Make sure to do a backup as this is not a guarantee. Ive killed many images this way but over a few dozen or hundred swap, I rarely have an issue.

3) I dont know about a GPU swap, not my specialty.

The GPU swap is just unplugging the 2700M and plugging the 3700M in, doubling the VRAM. A weird story, but i happen to have the precise upgrade card.

So it could do a plug and play swap? Cool. How do I configure/align compatible BIOSes. The W700 is newer, so it will have a newer and different bios "bed" for my T60P to lie on. Will my HD have a good night's sleep, or will it be a night of conflict?!

1: Just take the drive out and put it in the new machine AFTER backing up your drive.

2: Make sure your BIOS settings are similar, especially SATA mode. If you have compatibility or IDE mode, use that on your W700 and same for if you have AHCI. If they do not match, they WILL brick your drive image.

3: The BIOSes are similar enough on both machines, not a big deal. Do this when you have time, you could brick you drive and need to rebuild from a backup. I recommend a fresh install if you do rebuild your machine, don't use a partition backup.

Or get another T60 motherboard!
I have all types you may need:
- T60 with Intel graphics
- T60 with ATI X1300 graphics
- T60 with ATI X1400 graphics
- T60p with ATI FireGL V5200 graphics
See my webpage: https://www.theboardroom.info/stock1.html

Just take T530 with GPU and run with it. 128 bit GPU vram helps. And T530 is quad core capable, no mods if the 2 pipe heatsink can take 45W quad core. There's 3 pipe heatsink to do it if needed is for T530 too. T530 Chassis is same as W530 if one likes to swap boards to W530 plus W530 heatsink will give you pretty good support for both 45W and 55W quads and capable of supporting 32GB using 4 memory modules.

I am not impressed with some makers using 64 bit vram for GPU stuff.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

I'm buying a W700, because it has a very bright 17 inch screen, I have the GPU upgrade card on hand, and there is the possibility, with care, that I can hot swap my T60P HD into it.

I read somewhere that the WUXGA is S-PVA, nit regular TN.

Still trying to substantiate it.

It is TN, but on the good end of TN.

You don't. Just install on the new one, if it gives issues, you call Microsoft and tell them your computer broke and you "had some parts replaced". They will enable activation for you.

If you want viewing angle pictures, I can get you those if you are worried.

Not worried at all, but thanks.

Just intrigued by the possibity that it could be S-PVA, since that technology makes bright, contrasty screens

Frankly, screens smaller than 15 inches (which are marginal for me) were designed with the urging of opthamoloists in search of new clients.

"Hey! Look at my tiny screen," said Gulliver.

Based from http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display, WUXGA screen for the W700 is the Samsung LTN170CT01.

A quick google search gives this datasheethttps://www.touchandscreen.de/mediafile ... 01-L01.pdf.
Apparently it's the W700 screen because of the FRU # in the datasheet matches the HMM.

It's not PVA.

It has no Wacom digitizer, nor (I presume) color calibrator. $200.

What do you guys think?

Not bad. What processor? That is the big deal. The quad-core chips are FAST!!
