ThinkPad W510 720QM Hot

#1 Post by PeterNC » Fri Aug 03, 2018 6:46 am

Got a ThinkPad W510 with 720QM yesterday to replace a W500 with P9500/X9100 that kept shutting down.

This W510 gets really hot. It does not shut down. But it appears to throttle. Performance is significantly slower than my other W510 with 920XM despite having 8GB RAM and SSD as well.

Will install all Lenovo drivers (chip set and such) this evening. Will also need to open it up I guess and re-paste and check / vacuum the fan + heat sink.

Installed the W510 Windows 8 64BIT chipset drivers. This appears to help a lot. Temperature less extreme. Less throttling (e.g.: performance more consistently smooth) and fan is not spinning insanely non stop).

Will try new paste and heat sink alignment on Sunday perhaps. A bit worried after reading that is easy to actually make things worse on the W510.

Again, vacuuming will not fix that. Heatsink requires fan disassembly by take the fan assembly off the heatsink to get at the heatsink's fins properly with a brush and blow it out to finish cleaning. T500/W500 have same problem with dust build up inside the fan at the fins.

Yep. Need to do a disassembly.

Update: fan was almost completely clogged with dust. Almost no paste left. Cleaned out the fan. Applied new paste. Performance is a lot better and temperatures < 75C with full load (1440P video, Age of Empires 2 HD, Google Drive in Chrome).

Bought a bottle of Goo Gone today. The sticker residue came off very nicely.
