Best W500 replacement with same size/quality screen

#1 Post by Eddie_bowers » Fri Jun 07, 2019 3:33 pm

I want to get another older Thinkpad. I love my W500. I love where the buttons are I love the screen. It's just not quite fast enough for an audio applications I'm using. I want something that has the same look and feel but a few years later. I'm confused by the model numbers so I'm asking for advice. I saw a W5040 with an i7 quad core at under $400 and that's the price point I'm interested in. Would that be a good choice?

I tried upgrading my CPU on my W500 and I think I got a bad x9100, so now I'm just over trying to push that machine further.

I waited a long time and eventually found a mint condition top spec W520 with i7 CPU. I think I read on this forum that the keyboard from mine, can be fitted into a W530 but not sure about the W540.

I too would choose the W520.

I have a T520 but it is spec'ed out better than most W520's found on-line.

Don't forget that you scale down from a 16:10 to a 16:9 LCD.

The X220/T520 are the last with the classic 7-row keyboard. They are also faster than some later laptops with low power chips. The 1900x1080 screens on the T520 are quite good (but 16:9).

Correct, but it should always be noted in this context that the X230/T430/T/W530 series can be retrofitted with the 7-row keyboard via a fairly simple mod + EC patch.

Not with a few simple mods you don't.

There is no Lenovo ThinkPad after the *00 and *01 lineup, sans T410 and T410s, configurable with a 16:10 screen stock or modded.

I have the same concerns about screen size and real estate. My recommendation is to do as I did and construct a T420s or T430s with the 2560x1440 IPS mod (and Classic Keyboard mod in the case of the T430s). The laptop is smaller but much lighter with more screen real estate and improved viewing angles and quality. The WQHD screen is around $100, the adapter board is only available as a Chinese clone and goes for $60-70. A working T420s or T430s should be under $100. In total it's an around $300 investment but coming from a WUXGA T500 I am very pleased. The only thing you lose is some battery runtime compared to the older laptop with a healthy 9 cell.

lenovo T430 i5 3320m FHD 8GB
lenovo T430s i5 3230m QHD 8GB
lenovo T500 P9700 WUXGA 8GB
