W700 memory upgrade

#1 Post by LanceWilliams » Sun Jan 28, 2024 7:33 am

I have the W700, going to do a memory upgrade to the maximum of 8GB, the hardware maintenance guide shows two memory slots on the bottom and two on top under the keyboard, but I’m reading on posts here and found out first hand when I opened it up that there are only 2 slots on the bottom. There is a place on top where it could have gone just like the picture in the hardware guide shows but no slots installed. I also ran diagnostics and it showed 4 slots, seems odd. My questions are, since there are only two slots am I limited to still only using 2gb in each one for a max of 4gb? Or can I use 2 @ 4gb or even easier just a single 8 (the manual said 1 stick is ok as long as it’s on the bottom slot)?

Thank You!

I think the pm45 memory controller can only use the 4gb sticks at most and they have to be dual rank / 2rx8 / have 8 chips per side.

My guess it’s prep for the w701 design which can use four 8gb sticks.
