w520 FHD

#1 Post by puma » Mon Nov 28, 2011 12:37 pm

Hey guys, I am looking for a new thinkpad.. but the display is a huge deal. I just have two questions:
1. is the w series the only series to come with a FHD display? I know the x220 has an IPS but that laptop is too small.
2. How good is the FHD display on the w520?

Thanks

The T520 also has the FHD screen option.

It's apparently pretty good- though I haven't seen it first-hand.

It's better than any of the 1600 x 900 panels- it's got a 95% colour gamut and is also brighter.

Just say no to the ThinkBook Pro.

You're right, checked it out, very nice! Excellent display.

There is nothing else like it from Lenovo.

I also love the realestate of a 15" screen.

If you are a designer or photographer, stay away from the FHD display. It will oversaturate anything in sRGB profile and there is no way to compensate for this in most applications, or in Win 7. Only Photoshop or other specialized applications can handle the display, and it's inaccurate, in any case.

I have the FHD display on my W520, and while I want to love it, I can't say that I do 98-99% of the time. It's always either slightly too bright or too dim for office work, and the text too small (although I suppose I could fix that).

The other 1-2% of the time is when I game on the machine (very rarely as it's an office machine). At that point the screen seems great, although I only really use it for Civilization V.

Overall, I think it's better than the one on my X301, even though that is notorious for having a "bad" (relatively) screen (I think it's acceptable, and actually find the brightness easier to deal with/modulate on the X301 than the W520 ).

No idea about the colour accuracy since I don't do colour-critical stuff at work.

The W500 had a better resolution for me as the W520 is not compatible with the ThinkVision L2440p. The W500 with 1920*1200 worked better (e.g. WUXGA) than the W520 with 1920*1080.

This may happen if you use non-Lenovo Intel drivers. The two have different brightness gradiations.

I see, thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll try the Lenovo Intel drivers, which are slightly older than the stock Intel drivers. Worth the sacrifice as it's not like I will demand that the Intel HD graphics provide me with 3X7R3m3m1m1m!1111!111 performance anyway.
