my new W520 - buying memory, help please
OK... so Ive just ordered my new W520, here are the fundamentals of my Configuration:
i7-2860QM
Win 7 Professional 64 English
4GB RAM (1 DIMM) ------ please see my memory questions below (!!!)
15.6" FHD (1920x1080)
NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics with 2GB
Color Sensor
500GB 7200rpm Hard Disk
WiMax 6250
Im thinking of ordering RAM, so as I understand it my above configuration will take 32GB of RAM in 4 DIMM's, so according to the advice here I will be going with the Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4 x 8GB) 1600 chips.... am I good with this...?
Thanks !!

If your wallet is good with it, sounds good to me. I have a similar W520 but with 16GB (4x4GB) of Kingston 1600MHz RAM. Good luck with it. Are you planning on installing a SSD? Ahem, Samsung 830... Hint, hint! Enjoy.
P.S. I really do NOT like the color sensor and wish I had not wasted the money. Mine is disabled at startup. YMMV.

Unless I've missed something, when I clicked on the 'tech specs' at the link you provided, that is 240 pin desktop RAM. I have a w520 from work in my bag and even if that was 204 pin laptop RAM I seriously doubt anything with heat spreaders like that would fit.
You might want to consider this instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233265. It's the same brand, product, but in a laptop form factor (note that the heat spreader is not present).
Also, I just purchased 2 sticks of this for my T420: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233217. Bought it a few weeks ago on sale for $119.99. I'd wager it would be quite a struggle to tell the difference between the two to justify a $40 difference. But for $10, go for the faster ones.

Im still thinking about a SSD.... but given my tech limitations, Im not sure I would dare install a SSD after purchasing this... perhaps in my next laptop..??WA2SI wrote:If your wallet is good with it, sounds good to me. Regarding the Color Sensor, could you perhaps elaborate a little.... what were your negative issues with it...?
Thanks.

Steve... yes, you are correct, the link I posted above is the incorrect one. Your link is exactly what I need.... if I could abuse your patience a little further, just to make sure Im not doing something wrong here, I can order 2 (two) of these 8GB combos that you are quoting in your link above and install all 4 (four) RAM strips on the W520 to max out the total RAM at 32GB... is this correct..?wolfman wrote: Alejandro,

Also, will the 32 GB be plug and play with Windows 7 Professional or will I have to tweak the OS for the machine to recognize the full load of RAM...?
Thank you kindly for your help & patience with this,
Alejandro

Alejandro,
Yes, you can order 2 kits (4 sticks total) of that RAM and install in your W520. Windows 7 Professional 64 bit will recognize it without issue. That will be a very nice machine, congrats!

Re: my new W520 - buying memory, help please
That looks like a spitting image of my W520 build. And I am doing the exact same thing. I've ordered (and received) 2x kits of Corsair DDR3-1600 2x8gb kits to replace the single 4gb stick.Alejandro Audisio wrote:i7-2860QM

Yes, I have been jaded by (purported) technocrats. Almost as jaded by the tech itself.
