W500 - motherboard roasted

#1 Post by QWERTY Andreas » Thu May 31, 2012 12:55 am

Hello.
After three years of service, my W500 is nearly dead. When i start t with the dedicated GFX there is pink stains over the screen, and it blackout when reaching the login page. And this was one week after the warranty expired - oh bad luck

However i called lenovo, and they told they would take it and fix it, and extend the warranty with 2 monts b/c the receipt from when i bought it was 3 months newer than the day they warranty period started.

That was close..! :o

Best regards

hi there
Great to hear Lenovo is coming to the party ...so THEY SHOULD !
FYI - 4058 series ( w500 machines) are the one with HUGE GRAPHICS CARD issue(s) ... as its one of the FIRST PRODUCTION MACHINES with "switchable graphics" card(s) ....((if yours is 4058CTO models; which am guessing yours is - with Vista businessx64))

SO MAKE SURE they (Lenovo) replaces your MB with SAME CONFIG...ie check as soon as you get your machine (from Rapair) that infact you do have both , Intel Graphics and a DISCRETE Nividia - both should be present. I had a similair FAILURE (lucky for me was month b 4 end of warranty) and It took LENOVO 5 goes @ repairs before they got the CORRECT and RIGHT MB in there.....

And I remember - the communications back and forth after the 2nd time around = wasnt 'pretty' ....
In the end Lenovo did give me free 12 months warranty on WHOLE machine - well it was realy 5 months as it took them over 5 months to get things right !!! now that machine sits pretty nicely next to a W701DS ,,, and streams/plays BlueRay into the home network !!Sorry - just trying to give you the best info - hope I dont junxed ya...

Good luck ,,,

Cheers

FOLLOW UP:

I contacted lenovo support after 24 hours without updates. They told me there is something wring with the HINGES and the DISPLAY that is not covered by the warranty.

BUT; The error consists of pink lines showing up when using the ATi card, and they are showing up on both my external diplay (connected with VGA) and the internal diplay - but they are not being there while using the Intel card.

The support called me yesterday because they couldn't find the error, and i told them i had switched to intel GFX in BIOS before sending the laptop.

I haven't had any problems with my display, only the ATi GFX.

What am i supposed to do now?

Best regards

Andreas

I bought my W500 in April 2012, used on eBay, when my R61's motherboard failed. I was able to use many of the same accessories, such as the 2503 Advanced Dock, spare 90W AC adapter bricks, and ThinkPad's best 12.7mm DVD/CD burner, when I insert it into the dock. I like speed as much as the next guy, but as far as I'm concerned, by 2008 laptops became good enough that I was able to replace one 2008 ThinkPad with a better 2008 ThinkPad and not lose sleep over what I might be missing.
