it is possible to upgrade the display on a w700 to WUXGA?
long story short, my dad bought a w700 with a 1440x900 display. it's not too bad until you realise he also has a t500 with the same resolution on a 15".
anyway, is it possible to just replace the screen with a 1920x1200 display?

Yes. But, the screen might be hard to find. Might be easier to sell the WXGA+ one a go shopping for a W700 that has the WUXGA screen.
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

@ Murcielago - You should pop on over to the Lenovo Support Website and using the model type number for your ThinkPad confirm what the specific service part numbers (FRUs) are for the LCD you need but also the bundled LCD assembly cable as well before looking into selling your TP on.
You might be able to source the parts locally and save yourself some money & hassle but that's just my tuppence worth.

well, the irony is, my dad paid dearly for a supposedly new w700 with a 1440x900 which is much much more expensive than other used w700 with 1920x1200.Neil wrote:Yes. But, the screen might be hard to find. Might be easier to sell the WXGA+ one a go shopping for a W700 that has the WUXGA screen.

thanks for the tip. So far it will cost me US$140-150 including shipping...ScottyBoy wrote:@ Murcielago - You should pop on over to the Lenovo Support Website and using the model type number for your ThinkPad confirm what the specific service part numbers (FRUs) are for the LCD you need but also the bundled LCD assembly cable as well before looking into selling your TP on.

No probs mate - assuming that it's a brand new LCD and also the LCD assembly cable that sounds a pretty decent price IMHO.Murcielago wrote:thanks for the tip. So far it will cost me US$140-150 including shipping...

How did this screen swap turn out? Did you need to purchase the 3700 GPU also? And the proper cable? I have a mint w700 and love every pound of it except the screen. I hope to upgrade to the better screen soon!

I also have a W700 I would love to upgrade and have found a WXUGA screen to purchase. I remain unsure if I must also install the better (3700) GPU and a different cable to make it work? ThanksNeil wrote:Yes. But, the screen might be hard to find. Might be easier to sell the WXGA+ one a go shopping for a W700 that has the WUXGA screen.

No. 2700 can handle WUXGA easy. You can upgrade GPU if you need more VRAM, but 3700 hotter and more errorprone due to owerheating.jottoh12 wrote:I also have a W700 I would love to upgrade and have found a WXUGA screen to purchase. The LCD cable is the same for WXGA+ and WUXGA. Originally WXGA+ LCDs have 1 CCFL and WUXGA (LTN170CT01) have 2 CCFL so you need different invertor 45N4460. You can use original invertor and connect only one lamp but you got only 50% brightness.
I've done this upgrade long time ago. After that i've upgraded CPU to QX9300 (nowdays they are cheap). But 8Gb RAM limit is unbreakable. So i've got W701. 2800 already have 1Gb VRAM. But 2800 and 3800 is only DirectX 10 - so this is not gamer choise i can't play XCOM 2 on it).... so my path is W500 => W700 => W701 => W530
