W500 dim screen

#1 Post by mib404 » Sat Oct 13, 2012 7:44 am

I managed to put my hands an a w500, powerful machine, but bad screen. The LCD is a LTN154P3-L02, 1680 x 1050. Laptop came without hard drive, so I installed one and an operating system, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Brightness is at max 15, all drivers installed with Lenovo System update utility. This is the dimer laptop LCD I ever had, even the old T23 I have is brighter than this.
If I install XP 64 bit the screen will be more brighter? I have a T61p screen with a 1920x1200 resolution, can I test the whole screen assembly, the LCD cables are the same? Or I risk to damage the w500 motherboard?
From what I've read the WUXGA screen is even dimer than WSXGA+, is it true? I was thinking of replacing the 15.4 screen with a glossy one, with a lower resolution, will it fit inside the case and the LCD connector is the same? What is your opinion?

I have A W500 and i have just screen assembly (Including screen), and indeed the display brigthness is very bad on both screens. However the new one i installed is worse than the original - i think its because it have been used more (i bought it used).

I have a W510, and the screen is way brighter.

I was thinking of replacing the LCD with a WXGA panel with 1280x800 pixels resolution. The WSXGA+(1680x1050) it has right now is killing my eyes with small fonts and poor lighting. Has anybody done this?

Update 10/27: I've replaced the LCD panel with a WXGA, 1280x800 resolution, glossy. The panel has a dpi of 98, text is not small anymore, has plenty of light now. During replacement I tested a WUXGA(1920x1200) LCD, that panel was even dimmer that the WSXGA+ was.

Now I'm using a Chicony, it's to stiff, I don't like it. I'm think of buying this keyboard , what to you think, is it an original NMB keyboard?

I used to have a very dim WUXGA in my W500 as well. (Samsung) I replaced it with a brand new Sharp WUXGA (never used by lenovo) which is bright enough even for outdoor use during summer. I was so impressed, I bought a second one (also brand new) and am keeping it in the closet for the future. It is superior to the old Samsung WUXGA in every possible way I can imagine. The only disadvantage is that it isn't a plug and play display, you need to make modifications to the frame in order for it to fit.
