I have a W520, and ever since I recieved it (ordered it CTO) the screen hinges have creaked really bad. When one attempts to move the screen forward or backward from an open position, the right hinge will pop before it is free and will move fine until it you stop moving the screen and move it again.

I have tried opening the screen to full length and closing it repeatedly, and this will cure the problem for the next few opens, but by the next day the problem has returned.

Anyone know if any fixes?

So, any reason why don't you just send it back or request an on-site service...?

Laptop hinges are strange things, you may open the chassis and see if the screws are properly installed and can even give it a re-assemble service. But, if it's under warranty, I'd prefer to have it serviced by Lenovo unless there are other factors involved.

If the hinges themselves were defective from the beginning, there's not much you can do as they're really not designed for user serviceable. (of course, almost anything serviceable if one tries hard enough, but... You get the idea)

No reason, really. This is the first laptop I have seen like this - I love ThinkPads because of their tight lids, but this is a little overboard!

I haven't looked at the HMM on it yet, but do you happen to know how they get to the hinges? Do they remove the screw covers at the bottom corners of the screen?

And the hinge covers (if any).
