Broken and cracked lid, new ordered need help :( *PIC

#1 Post by Heliotropen » Sat Nov 17, 2012 3:06 pm

Hi all.
So my second handed thinkpad w500 with the cat smashed lid and too tight hindges finally cracked a little, and now the domino effect have started.
I love this machine and it's not old enough to be retired yet!!!

http://s15.postimage.org/rvil0z5iz/2012 ... _35_59.jpg

I actually tried gluing it with 2 component epoxy, but there was not enough contact space so it could not hold it.

Anyways, I ordered one of these babies, hope I will have it in denmark in a few weeks:

I asume it's all I have to change (beside greasing the hindges) to fix the problem?

Any guide on how to change this [censored]? (I'm rather good a such things, but a guide to how to do it smartest would be awesome)...

REALLY appreciates it guy's

Hi.

Sadly that wont fix the problem. You need a whole new Magnesium back plate for the LCD, since its that one that is cracked. This problem is very common on W500 units (i have one that had the problem, one i know had this problem, and i have read about it other places)

So the easiest way is probably to swap the whole assembly :-(

Best regards from Denmark :)

The Hardware Maintenance Manual is the best resource for disassembling the system. You can find one for the W500 here:

Tak Andreas, sådan noget lort pg lagkage... Men cool at der er danske thinkpad entusiaster herinde også :)

Thnx guys, I actually bought the backplate, guess I Will have to try to and buy a magnesium frame then, or try to glue it together, any one WHO have experience with the last?

I love this machine, and would hate to see it die already.

Jeg tilslutter lige danskerfesten så.. ;)

Anyways, my W500 makes some rather disturbing 'cracking-noises' when I touch the upper left side of the display bezel, hasn't cracked open yet though. Did you experience similar stuff with yours before it cracked?

You would need one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-IBM-T500-W5 ... 19cbd72978

It will cost approx: 1562.26 kr

However you could also try to look at "Guloggratis" og DBA.. i bougt at whole LCD assembly for 310 kr :D

Hej Cola :)

Actually, the [censored] that promised my machine would be as new, never told me, that his cat have made a serious attack on it, so it was already caking up when I got it, and it just became a domino effect ...

If I where you I would grease the hindges, not something I know anything about, since no thinkpad I have ever had before have ever needed this, - but I'm for sure in hell going to, so this don't happen again ....

Well I'm not going to pay that amount ... but if I could get it for 310 that would be my solution ...

Right now I'm thinking about(looking into) using fiberglass-reinforcement :)

Okay I really REALLY want this machine up and running again fast, - so I really needs your guys help

I have ordered the plastic cover, check!

I'm going to order a new magnesium lcd roller cage:
1. WILL this one fit my machine?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-IBM-T500-W5 ... 0794058104

2. Is there anything else I need to repair this animal?

3. The hinge seams to have locked it self into place: how do I fix that?

4. Is there any guides for:
a. how to get the screen off the machine? so I can replace the lcd rollar cage.

b. how to replace the magnesium frame, and plastic cover, while keeping my screen?

I hope you guys can help me out here.

Yes thank you, I have looked a bit in it:

But I thought more about user 1 on 1 experiences, with etc. the hindge, and magnesium frame problem ...
I have browsed so many threads now, and my head is getting buzzy, but many ppl seams to have this problems :)

So mainly I'm thinking:
1. if there is something with the hinge (that seams to have locked itself a bit).
2. The magnesium lcd cage: does the one on ebay look good? and are they really that expensive? :) is there any other solutions, does a lcd rollorcage from an t61 fit etc?

Again, I really apprciates it:
I'm browsing both the pdf and the video guide right now :)

Thnx again...
A confused and a bit frustrated Helio, who just really want his machine back in order again :)
EDIT: LCD front bezel (LCD cover kit) - got it (searched to far down the page) I think I'm onto how to disasembly the LCD, and everything in it now ... so the two above questions seams to be it.... darn I hope I can do this :d

Hey guys. Old thread, but maybe someone here can help. I've got a T500 with the same problem, except my Part Number, as listed on the lower back of the magnesium frame, is "P/N 42x4794". Everyone else seems to have either "P/N 42x4793" or 43Y9736. Could someone clarify? Would the 42x4793 work?

I do see two different frames listed at NotebookParts.com for two different prices:

http://www.notebookparts.com/lenovo-thi ... f-42x4793/
http://www.notebookparts.com/lenovo-thi ... e-42x4794/

Thanks!

Ok, it turns out that when you get the LCD out of there, on the part of the Mg frame that is hidden by the LCD it says "ASMP // N42X4793", wheras on the back, embossed into the Mg, is the 4794 number.

Thought I'd let you know, in case anyone else gets confused!

What's confusing is that you are probably comparing the ASM and FRU numbers against each other. They are two different means of identifying one part. In some cases, they differ only by the last digit, whereas, other times they can be completely different. Case in point: I'm staring at two DVD Multi III drives I've taken out of two T420 systems. One, a Sony AD-7710H has an ASM of 75Y5112 and FRU of 75Y5113. The other, an HLDS GT50N, has ASM 75Y5235 and FRU 75Y5115.

i seem to have the same exact thing on a w500 screen frame, but inner number is actually printed in some blue ink as p/n 43Y9736...
