Wireless connection speed

Have a W520 (i7) with a 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter. It takes foreverrrrr to connect to the internet. Ran a comparison with hubby's HP (i3)(Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/h 1x1 wifi adapter)--my computer takes a full minute longer to connect to wireless internet than his. If my computer is at a "computer shop," it doesn't act this way. Does anyone have a clue what the issue is?

What does it's status say when connecting?

If I disable DHCP on my laptop and assign it a fixed IP within the range I excluded from DHCP on my router, it connects a lot faster.
