WWAN mini pci-e options for W530

#1 Post by djc » Thu Apr 25, 2013 10:45 pm

Hi,

What are my options for a WWAN card for a W530 (3438)? I need something that'll do 3g on 850mhz and ideally 4g/lte on 1800mhz.

I've been investigating the Sierra MC7710 because it does have lte on 1800mhz but it looks like it doesn't support 3g on 850mhz and requires 3 antennas. I'm also not sure it's officially supported in the W530.

I think officially Lenovo offer an Ericcson and a Gobi 3000 or 4000 – both supporting 3g on 850mhz but not 4g/lte. The 3G support is a must with 4G support just a "nice to have".

So I've decided the Gobi 3000 will be the most appropriate. When I look at the Lenovo accessories compatibility guide (www.lenovo.com/accessoriesguide) it lists the Gobi 3000 as being compatible with the W530 (3438), but for U.S. only.

So I'm hoping someone can confirm this, since I'm not in the U.S. can I safely get a Gobi 3000 off ebay and use it in my W530 (3438) without the bios refusing it?

I bought the cheapest HP-branded Gobi2000 card I could find but so far I have not managed to get it up and running :(
