#1 Post by nandudb » Sun Jun 02, 2013 7:01 pm

Hi Experts,

I would like to upgrade RAM on my thinkpad W510. Following are the configuration details

W510 4318 CTO
Intel Core(TM) i7 CPU Q820 @1.73GHZ, Currently i have 12G RAM

Please suggest me the best RAM which would fit for W510 for better performance. I am thinking of upgrading upto 32G RAM.
I believe i can upgrade upto 32G as processor is Quadcore(Q820), please correct me if am wrong
I have recently upgraded to SSD, so, would like to upgrade RAM to make it complete fast machine

Following are the few found in website, but not sure whether they will be perfect fit??

Unless you have a need for memory hogging applications like VMs, perhaps you do, 12GB far exceeds what a typical user would need. If you do need more memory, I don't think the brand matters much as long as you buy a reputable brand.

The W510 reads the JEDEC info of the ram modules, so it should support most low latency memory sticks, well pretty much any sticks actually.
Intel has added some confusion, by making something called Intel Extreme Memory Profiles (XMP).
Some laptop memory supports this, and is rated as having low cas latency.
But the JEDEC table of these sticks, may just have standard timings set, and the W510 does not support XMP.

So if you want the fastest memory, avoid XMP sticks, but low latency memory doesn't really make much of a difference.
