W701 has bad NIC. Replace system board? What is TPM?

A friend's W701 (4323-CTO) will appear to make a connection via it's ethernet port but no traffic passes. I'm of the opinion that replacing the system board is the best course of action. Any other advice?
Looking in the HMM for the correct FRU for the system board I see TPM and non-TPM models. What is TPM and how do I determine if this W701 has it?
Thanks!

What I would do is visit the
Lenovo website. Enter the ThinkPad's serial number. Find the shipping planar in the parts list.
The trusted platform module (TPM) info can be found
here.

are you sure the nic is bad. They're usually pretty reliable and this could be driver/settings issue. I would boot to linux or something and see if the issue reproduces itself. Also usb and pc card nics might be an option. Replacing the entire board for just that part is going to be fairly expensive.

A very solid piece of advice on all levels.
Parts for W70* generation are difficult to locate and very expensive. Even if the LAN card is defective, planar swap would not be my recommendation...

Thanks to all repliers. I've just finished restoring this W701 to factory default. The NIC problem still exists. Funny thing, it reports as connected, the link and activity LEDs flash but no traffic passes. Checked to make sure that the Client for Microsoft Networks was enabled on the NIC.
Will try the boot to Linux method and report back.

try changing out the cable, changing switch/router port. I'd try giving it a static address, direct connect it to another computer (also give it static address) via crossover cable see if you can ping the other pc.
Basically I'd try the easiest to hardest possible solution because a planar change is a pain in the ...

FIXED: changed adapter's link speed & duplex from Auto-detect to 100full. Go figure....
