W520 LCD shuts off

#1 Post by wolfman » Fri Jul 12, 2013 3:05 pm

Good afternoon,

Odd occurrence twice today - while using my work laptop (Thinkpad w520) on a desk, plugged in, while typing(!), without an external monitor attached, my LCD powered off. Twice, about 2 hours apart.

The machine was still running, I could hear the fans, etc. The only thing I can come up with that is different than my normal usage is that it was sitting at my desk and my chair was a little lower today than normal and my left hand may have been pressing slightly harder in the area of the trackpoint buttons than normal. But I'd be hard pressed to think that had anything to do with it (but may be wrong).

I'm awaiting the tech from my company to take a look at it (Monday) - in the meantime I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has encountered something similar before (LCD replacement or something else). Thanks...

Steve

Did it power off permanently (untill forced reboot) or did it power up again after a second?

A loose connector might be the cause of temporary disconnects.

I powered off completely until I forced a reboot. I tried to move the LCD forward and back, tried closing and reopening the lid, etc. It was stationary (other than maybe a slight vibration from typing) each time it powered off. Never saw this before on any of my laptops...

Have you tried lowering the screen brightness one notch to see if that prevents the problem from occurring ?

I'll give this a try as the LCD was set to maximum brightness.
