Twist and sleeping W520

So my W520's developed a bit of an interesting issue.
Whenever I apply a minor amount of torque to the bottom-left corner of the screen (near the hinge and upwards), the laptop will blank the screen and then enter Sleep mode. It also works in reverse- if the computer is sleeping, I can wake it up by applying the same force. Changing the angle of the screen when I apply the force does not change the results nor does this work on the opposite side (though it might exhibit a weird screen effect before it sleeps).
If I do this outside of an OS (i.e. in the GRUB bootloader), the screen just goes blank and the picture immediately returns once I remove the force.
Keep in mind that this is a minor force- much like one would use to make a one-handed adjustment to the screen- and the laptop hasn't been subjected to any falls or drops over its lifetime.
This problem doesn't just happen when the notebook is open- if the lid is closed (keep in mind that the machine is not set to standby on lid close) and I press on the edge it will go into and resume from standby as if I pressed the (inaccessible) button.
Using two hands to adjust the screen (while touching the area that makes the issue happen) does not alleviate the issue and it does not happen if I do the same thing to the opposite side.
Sometimes the wireless connectivity will drop out and require a reboot to fix when I do this repeatedly though that might just be an issue with Windows itself.
Any ideas as to why this might happen or how to go about fixing this problem?
