W700/701 Screen swap possible?
W700/701 Screen swap possible?
Hi.
Do you know if there is an compatible IPS screen for W700/701?
Lets say something from HP model 8710w like in this post http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=106898
Do you think it would fit, or there is no chance?

Re: W700/701 Screen swap possible?
There's been some discussion about it... and I've once considered trying it on my standard W700... but it just doesn't seem like a modification that would pay off, versus the amount of work required to get it done. Even if the screen is a perfect fit, you'd have to worry about whether the LCD data controller and the EDID chip can take the particular panel from the HP. There's also the question of if the screen calibrator would still work.
From what we discussed though-the 8710w is your best shot. But finding one with a WUXGA WVA to donate is hard enough as it is.

Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

On ebay there are just display assemblies from HP, I do not know if they are IPS yet.
But on the other hand I do not have a w700 yet.
I personally think that no laptop is complete without some sort of Wacom support
And W700 I believe is the only big one with such feature.
Will have to try and see if Lenovo screen is enough.

Re: W700/701 Screen swap possible?
I'm pretty sure the W700/701 are the only production laptops in the world with a built-in Wacom digitizer, and the W700ds/701ds are the only production laptops with a slide-out second screen.
The W7xx/7xxds are a pretty ridiculous class of laptop. And I'm certain that anyone who owns one right now will not be letting go of theirs so easily... it's probably why the mod hasn't been outlined or documented yet. I'd love to try it, but I don't see anything wrong with Lenovo's WUXGA panel, and I'd rather not go tearing pins, bending parts and popping inverters just for the sake of a slightly better screen that runs at the same resolution.
That and the HP WUXGA WVA(IPS) screens are incredibly rare, the spares you see on ebay for cheap are definitely not the WUXGAs. I remember looking once and saw that they were advertising WXGA+ screens(1440x900) to replace the original screen if it was broken... can you imagine that? Buying this laptop, busting the screen and then getting it back from the repair shop to see it can't reach your old resolution?

Re: W700/701 Screen swap possible?
I was toying with the idea of building a W701-based FrankenPad with a DC2 panel from 8740W but gave up on it after speaking with two guys who have seen the guts of both units on numerous occasions...to me personally, that would be the only screen that would make sense as an upgrade to W70* unit, and that operation is a "no-go"...

Re: W700/701 Screen swap possible?
I did another quick glossing over this mod-after tearing my W700ds's front screen bezel off, the WUXGA panel it's currently equipped with is a Samsung LTN170CTO1-001. All the info on the screen is given here: http://www.panelook.com/LTN170CT01-001_ ... _8827.html
What's interesting is that the display is a dual-bulb CCFL LCD. I assume it's for extra brightness or better splitting of the light... the display doesn't appear to be any bigger than any other WUXGA display, so a screen swap would seem possible. However, I wasn't able to find any documentation on any model no.s for HP's DC2 screen, or any IPS WUXGA HP displays.
