W520 HDD Upgrade

#1 Post by Takeda » Sat Nov 30, 2013 2:33 pm

I'm presently running a Seagate 750GB 7200 RPM Hybrid drive. I would like to upgrade to 1TB, and I'm considering the Seagate 1TB Hybrid drive.

Is there any recommendations? Thank you!

I have a few Momentus XT 500 GB drives and 1 of the new 1 TB SSHD drive. Did not notice much of a speed difference between the two. The hybrid drives are faster than a HDD but nowhere near the speed of a SSD. I would consider getting a 120 GB SSD for OS and programs with a HDD in the Ultrabay for data.

Western Digital is coming with a dual drive (SSD+HDD) in one package, now that would be a nice combo.

Thank you for your post, and suggestions. Presently, my 750GB Hybrid drive is plenty fast, I just need the 1TB for additional storage. The 750GB is a 7200RPM drive, and the 1TB is only 5600RPMs. Any idea how much slower the 1TB will be?

In terms of speed they are about the same. On ATTO benchmark they are about the same. During normal every use, I did not notice any difference. I do like the old XT drives better because the flash is SLC vs MLC on the new drives.

I saw from Seagate's website, there are 2 1TB Hybrid drives. One is a Momentus XT 1TB Hybrid.

Looks like it's going to be expensive. One would probably be better off getting a 120GB mSATA and Hitachi 1.5TB 5K1500 if you want to maximize space, provided you're not using WWAN of course.
