Is it possible to install a LG display on a W-500

#1 Post by poliorcetes » Thu Jan 30, 2014 5:47 am

Hi people,

I have been reading about the differences between Samsung and LG displays for W500 and T61P. My question is: would it be possible to install a LP154WU1-TLB1 (from a T61P) on a W500? In thinkwiki is marked as a brighter display, compared with the samsung one.

Aurora said that it is possible to install a sharp display, but after modifying it. Are there another plug-and-play display alternatives?

As some other people say, W500 are magnificent machines. Indeed, I change my hard disk for a SSD and put more memory in order to improve it, and it works now like a charm. After reading your rants about samsung's dim display, now I appreciate more its lack of brightness (specially on the right side, there is a darker band).

What would you do?

Thanks in advance for the answers

Yes. It's plug & play.

I fully agree that the only real weak spot of the W500 is the Samsung WUXGA panel if one is unlucky enough to get one in the first place.

My pre-production "testbed" W500 survived a ton of abuse and performed flawlessly, but the LCD itself was a piece of junk.

Happy upgrading.

Thanks for answering.

In order to be sure before ordering it, an LG LP154WU1-TLB1 could be installed on a W500?

Besides, my local provider offers it as glossy, not matte. Is that correct or is it a mistake?

Finally, I didn't mention that the main flaws of my [censored] samsung display are a right band, quite darker (although it doesn't render it unusable, it bothers me), and not enough illumination for a bright room. Would the mentioned LG display offer significant advantages over these flaws?

Thanks again. I am delighted by the rest of the elements of the W500, and since I upgraded memory and change HD for an SSD one, I just want a unobjectable tool for my daily work.

Get a proper screen with a FRU #.

It *must* be matte. Not glossy. Ever.

Exactly. My two main points of attraction for thinkpads were the keyboard and the matte screen.

Do you mean that there is a difference between a display offered as FRU 42T0361 and another display offered under LP154WU1-TLB1 designation?

An UK-based company has offered me a LTN154U2-L06 instead of LG display. Do you people think that it offers enough more brightness in order to justify a substitution of my actual LTN154U2-L05?

I mean, my LTN154U2-L05 is not horrid, it just doesn't offer enough light in very illuminated ambients

I really would appreciate any hints about it, since I really like my W500 and I want it running as perfect as I can

I try to stay away from Samsung displays from this era if at all possible.

If I were on a quest for a WUXGA panel I'd stick with LG or look into the Sharp one that folks have modded their W500s with.

Good luck.
