3d games over w510

#1 Post by aldimeola81 » Sat Mar 08, 2014 3:49 pm

How good is the w510 for games? I currently use a T61P with overclocked video card and processor T9500, the performance on win 7 64 are 6.5 for the 2D and 3D, how evaluated fx 880 over win 7? Is it capable to play latest games at medium setting?

Easy answer: no. Unless you refer to some lame flash-based games or something. There is no way the W510 is gonna run BF4 for example.

I would not be as conclusive. There is a great variance of GPU demands of games, even among those belonging to the same era, and there is a lot between "lame flash-based games" and BF4, with many great games fitting in between.

I've played with the T61P to sleeping dogs, saint row 3, gta4 smoothly with a T9500 and a bit 'of overclocking, then as a 3d w510 is less than a T61P? What score did like 3d on windows 7? My T61P 6.5 with nvidia card overclocked

The fx -880 is so poor over 3d?

No, just a difference between persons what one considers "capable". I don't play a shooter if I can't get 60 fps.

And I won't play it on anything smaller than 1600x...

your W520 score receive in windows 7 under wei under 3d ? can you post it?

here mine about t61p when overclocked

in the near future I would like to change the T61P with something more 'fast and I thought a W510 or W520 ..

does anyone know if playing on one of these models, the system will overheat as on my T61P or if the defect has been fixed?

Last time I checked my W520 uses the Intel "onboard" video thingy for getting the WEI score..., so it looks rather bad. But I don't do any gaming on my W520. I have a desktop for that. And I'm very sure even my old GTX 570 beats the W520

I have my FX570M overclocked around 25%. I get around 5k in 3Dmark '06

The FX880M get around 6k+ in 3Dmark '06. So the W510 have a faster Graphics Card. It also have support for more (and cheaper) RAM (important on laptops, since they have a limited amount of vRAM and Thus need shared mem). To finish it off, it have a quadcore that is much, much faster :thumbs-UP:

My FX880M can run at around 600/1320/950MHz at 0.85v, I normally run it at GT330M speeds 575/1265/790MHz

At the default 0.93v, it can go as high as 675/1485/950MHz, this provides a 3DMark06 score of 8207.

At default clock 550/1210/790MHz, I get a 3DMark06 score of 7062

I have the 720QM CPU and 2x2GB DDR1333 CL7 memory.

3DMark 06 tests where run at 1280x800, as I have the HD+ display, I think the default is 1280x1024?

With the GPU at 0.85v and core parking disabled (disable "CPU power management" in BIOS), fan speed at max, temps rarely go above 70C.

If I run furmark and four threads prime95 simultaneously, CPU temps can go as high as the late 80's, the GPU doesn't go much above 80C.

With core parking enabled a single thread of prime95 and furmark both on one CPU core, will crash the system, this will cause thermal runaway, throttling and crashing.

My recommendation is to disable core parking, run the GPU at 0.85v, overclock the GPU as much as you can, and stay away from 55w XM CPU's.
Do not overclock the video memory, not if you want the machine to last.
Always run the fan at the second highest speed (7) when gaming (not the highest as this is a safety measure, not a fan speed made to be used on a regular basis).
Also make sure the cooler fits properly, that good cooler paste is used, and applied correctly, W510's can be pain in the behind, but once the cooling has been sorted out, they are fast and run pretty cool under most loads.
Idle temps are relatively high with this config though, 53-58C with the fan controlled by the BIOS (speed 2-3).

I do not think to overclock the w510, the T61P has never exceeded 75 C, however, is dead, who knows if the w510 will not make the same end in a year? 80 C are not few. If performance is double than the T61P is fine with me as is. Regarding the fan, the T61P has worked for all the time that I played set to 64, and the fan still runs fine

I'm pretty sure a T61p would easily go above 80C if you run furmark + two threads of prime95, my T500 did, even though mine had a 25w CPU.

As long as you run the GPU in the W510 at 0.85v and you disable core parking, you should be fine, assuming the cooler fits properly.

During normal loads (like gaming) temps won't go much above 70C as I said.
Four threads of prime95 and furmark produces the highest temp possible with the system, few games will cause such high temps, if they do, it will only be in short bursts, unless the game has a bug.
But even if there is a bug that causes high temps, the furmark + prime95 test shows that the system can handle it.

the w510 has arrived today, is perfect with the fan set to 64 sleeping dogs playing in the temperature reaches 60C, with ubuntu is a show, the keyboard a pleasure ..

only flaw, slide the hard disk: first I held the lid open and I changed the hard disk drives in flight depending on what I needed: Windows, Linux, and others .. this thing I was doing several times a day. .
I now have to pick up the handset, remove the screw, open the lid ..
besides the fact that it is still sata 2 and I only use ssd hard drives

I have to buy a hard drive Ultrabay adapter

video performance is much better than the T61P, maybe a little less than twice ..

I paid 400 euro shipped from Italy, the price is high?

I think the price is good, W510 do go for fairly low prices though, probably due to the overheating issues.

not known any overheating problem on my own.

temperatures are very low, the fan is very efficient.

during the game, setting the fan to 64 with tpfan control, GPUZ me a maximum temperature of 61C, the normal working temperature is about 40C

3D performance is very good for my opinion, I could not ask for better

In games that don't make use of all four cores, my W510, with the config I posted above, doesn't go much above 60C either, I don't use the highest fan speed though.

Performance is fine though yes, the W510 is a fast machine still.

Your idle temps seem very low, under which conditions did you make that reading? same for games, did you check temps while the game is running, or did you exit/minimize the game the check temps?

An easy way to get good readings is with CPUID HWMonitor, as i logs the highest temp, just run the app, play your game, and open HWMonitor again so see how hot it got.
It takes a while for the W510 to heat up, but it cools down very quickly.

You should try furmark and Prime95, some games run cool, others run extremely hot.

You didn't get a dual core W510 did you?

I was talking about the temperature of the GPU, not the CPU.
The cpu is working under stress at a temperature of 65 C, it is not a problem, never seen a cpu intel burned in my life. I check the temperature with GPUZ I detect the maximum, minimum and current.
The temperatures I found sleeping dogs playing at a medium level of performance where the graphics are smoother driving a Lamborghini to the max :)

My cpu is i7 720QM

Ah ok, that game doesn't seem to be very demanding at all.

I recommend that you keep a temp monitor running whenever you are playing games, one that logs the highest temps, so that you can keep an eye on it.
Starcraft 2 runs extremely hot fx. so does Borderlands 2 and Fallout 3/New Vegas (only in certain places though).

sleeping dogs is very voracious performance however, if I put the extreme level with the screen resolution can not even move in the menu.

I said that of course the temperatures are recorded during the game, but why do you worry about the the cpu temp and not that of the gpu? which program you use to observe the temperatures? I saw that cpufancontrol not detect the temperature of the GPU, but only the temperature of the cpu

I worry about both CPU and GPU, they sit on the same cooler so if one gets hot, so will the other.

I use CPUID HWMonitor, I just run it, minimize it and play whatever game I intend to, when done I take a look at HWMonitor.
It can take hours for the system to reach it's peak temperature.
If the CPU reaches 91C it will throttle, if the CPU stays much above 80C for long, the GPU will get really hot, and in turn make the CPU run hotter.
Playing games with the CPU at 87C and the GPU at 84C will be very hard on the hardware.

I'm not entirely agree :

temperatures of gpu and cpu are mutually dependent but not much, the CPU can ' be such as to fifteen degrees less than the gpu or vice versa

and I do not think you should worry about pushing the fan to level 64 if the temperatures are high : that evil can 'do the load of a fan that consumes 50mA perhaps the motherboard ? or do you think you could damage the fan itself?
the T61P has turned to level 64 maybe for 6 months in total and the fan noise does not even now that I have changed the motherboard

I have a hard ssd only to play, I put on only windows 7 64 bit drivers and tpfancontrol , just put the fan to turn on and open up the game .

the temperature monitored with gpu z in the background never exceeds 61C , I think I should be happy , today I cleaned the cooling system with an air compressor and it seems that the temperature dropped a few degrees more ..

about sleeping dogs , someone has noticed that inside the police cars there is a thinkpad open ?

should be the official game of thinkpads.com :D :D

The CPU and GPU temps will equalize over time, the CPU does tend to run a bit hotter then the GPU though.

Putting the fan at the highest speed doesn't make enough difference to warrant the noise and shorter lifespan of the bearings.
But I don't mind that others use their fan differently then me.

I can still make my W510 go in to thermal runaway with the fan at speed 64.

I did some testing with core parking enabled, and it seems something has changed since last time I did that.

Last time I tested like this, a single thread of Prime95 and furmark on the same core, would make the CPU run at 2.8GHz and it would go straight in to oblivion.

Lenovo released a new BIOS version last year, and it seems it has changed the turbo boost behavior, I can barely make the CPU go above 2.4GHz now.
No Lenovo did not release a BIOS last year, I remembered wrong.

With the fan speed at 7, temps for core 3 can go as high as 88C (core 0 84, core 1 84, core 2 86)
At fan speed 64 core 3 goes as high as 86C.
A lot of throttling was going on, but never below 1.73GHz.

My test run was not super extended, but the (undervolted and overclocked) GPU got as hot as 76C.

I'll write more if I find anything to add.

Edit: I have a spare W510 fan, maybe I should use fan speed 64 as long as I have a spare.

Edit2: no the changed turbo boost behavior was caused by OS settings I had forgotten about, still the throttling behavior has improved.
This can't be the case, I must be able to reach higher temps if I test for longer, as I have before, and summer is coming.

Edit3: I went back to my previous settings, less noise, less stuttering, never throttles.
I also tried using the GPU with adaptive clocks, and then overclocking it, the performance improvement was not big enough to worry about.
Naa, I want to disable "CPU Power Management" and run the GPU at 0.85v, it provides the best balance of factors.

What cpu do you have? I've tried to disable cpu power management on the bios but i don't see any difference about working temperature and speed..
How can i set full time turbo mode?

Disabling "CPU Power Management" will drastically lower peak temperatures with single or dual threaded loads, as the max CPU clock is limited to the highest speed the CPU can run at when all four cores are active.

I have a 720QM, so with CPU Power Management disabled, it maxes out at 1.73GHz.
With CPU Power Management enabled, it can run 2.8GHz single threaded, 2.4GHz dual threaded, and 1.73GHz multi threaded.

You can control CPU clocks using windows power manager, or IBM_ECW.

What tests are you using to heat up the system?

I'm not really doing a lot of testing, sometimes playing with some 3D gaming with the fan set to max, and the rest of the time I use the w510 with ubuntu, however, not known high temperatures, indeed ..

if you want me to do a test with my tell me as well, for comparison, I also have the cpu i7 720
