great, I used the shoe polish black, long time ago on my T61P, great job.
in reality 'the thermal paste is a bad conductor, only serves to compensate for the minimal irregularities' surfaces, the contact between the heatsink and the chip is the key thing.
Shoe polish as thermal paste?
But yes, thermal paste tend to be a fairly poor conductor of heat, so a well fitted cooler is very important.
There definitely is a significant difference in thermal performance between toothpaste and thermal compound though.
no, I used shoe polish to verify the precise coupling between the heat sink and cpu / gpu, after I cleaned and put the thermal paste
a bit as Prussian blue for coupling the differential

Ah yes, shoe polish does sound like something that would work well for that purpose, as long as it can be cleaned off again without too much trouble.

I got great results with Arctic Silver 5 I redid the paste on my W510 and I was able use almost full power and use all cores and hyper threading

I used someone else's guide and took in account that they said to use a generous amount of paste. So I figure use more than thin but not too much paste and I used the spread method and use another bag when I thought I had used too much to rub some of the paste off and used q tips to clean the sides of the cpu and gpu of extra thermal paste. I really don't like Arctic Silver 5 I have had mix results and not so good results but its been working so far. I also used something else too I rolled a piece of foil and crushed it flat but not too flat and I put it on top of the cpu heat sink after I had clamped everything down also made sure that the cpu and gpu heat sinks were as level flat as I could get them evenly. I put the foil piece on the of the cpu and I use the clamp that holds the keyboard above to hold it in place and it seem to help too with the heat. its in low 40c's to high 40c's in idle and around 49c to 55c while using. I am mad though that my T510 had way better cooling, it seems that they didn't take there time on the W510 and the W510 is suppose to be way better the T510!

If you do the keyboard mod, the cooler will be able to breathe much better, and temps will god down significantly.
Stop worrying too much about idle temps though, what matters most is that the difference between idle and full load temps are not too big.
So it might actually be a good idea to use less aggressive fan control and let the system idle at higher temps, so that it runs in the 50-60C range most of the time.
You do need more paste on these CPU's then previous ones, due to the large core, and excessive paste can help diminish the effects of a poorly fitted cooler, but not eliminate them.
But you have run no tests, you do not yet know if any of your work has changed anything, idle temps can tell you something about fan speeds, but not much about temperatures.

FYI with the FRU 60Y5494 heatsync and Arctic Silver, I lowered my idle temps to mid/high 40s from mid/high 50s. I run the CPU and GPU at stock speeds without anything disabled or any mods.

Thanks for sharing bgalakazam.
We can safely say that the AVC cooler 60Y5493 usually has a poor fit, and that the 60Y5494 doesn't.
Both my 60Y5493 fit poorly, I did manage to fix one of them though, the other one had solder on the CPU pad, junk is what it is.
So to anyone reading through this thread, who has heat problems with their W510 and a 60Y5493 cooler, go get a 60Y5494 in stead, unless you want to try and bend your 60Y5493 in to shape (extremely difficult to do).

update:
I'm often using the w510 for playing 3D games, with a small overclock using msi afterburner to 640MHz (core) and 800MHz (memory).
the temperature is always stable, for convenience 'during the game I fixed the fan speed' 7 and the temperature of the GPU hardly exceed 70C.
Yesterday while I was playing there were 30C in the room, the chassis of the w510 was hot to the left of the keyboard (the metal tape does its job) the temperature of the CPU was 75C and the temperature of the gpu 71
operating temperatures are about 44C and cpu 36gpu during normal use.
with changes made to the w510 has become a great gaming machine.
I also tried to increase the memory from 4GB to 12 GB but I've had zero improvement in framerate, so I went back to the original 4gb.

My finding are very similar to yours aldimeola81, my idle temps are higher though, since the fan shuts off at 48C.
I have pushed the GPU a bit further, Core 652MHz, Mem 966MHz, Shader 1433MHz.
When using more then two sticks of memory the "Command Per Clock" rate is increased to 2T (it is at 1T with two sticks or less).
In theory, the W510 would have faster memory with only two sticks.
And I agree, I have quite enjoyed gaming on my W510 with my old IBM POWERdisplay 20.
It took a while, but but now my W510 works flawlessly, constantly, and I have stopped worrying.

Lately I've been away from the forum ..
my workhorse is still the w510, I no longer 'made changes since then, never again' disassembled and the system works fine and cold .. I was thinking of a new CPU to make it go faster: a intel i7- 920xm ..
for the moment I mount an i7-720QM ..
someone has made the transition and can give me some advice?is a convenient upgrade or not? is possible to overclock that cpu over the w510? as a hard disk I use 3 ssd (internal and Ultrabay esata) and I have 8gb of memory, I would like to speed it up further if possible.
thank you to everyone.

You will not be able to overclock the XM series CPU's in the W510, unless Throttle Stop has improved.

Hi Adda!
I've found the 920xm over eBay china at 170€ shipped.. And I've just bought it.. Now I only must wait about a month... The overclock isn't really my priority, but I'll try for sure..

the cpu has arrived , mounted using " gelid extreme" as thermal paste
I'm using it for an hour, it seems as fresh as before but much more ' fast , soon I will do the tests .
bye

I did some tests with benchmark and 3D games:
overclocking works perfectly using ThrottleStop 6, a setting that seems stable is the block turbo 3,4ghz for all cores together .. the games improve a lot and the temperature of the cpu does not exceed 85C
during normal use, the i7-920XM, is warm as my old i7-720xm, sometimes the fan stops, then starts again .. I thought the PC would become very noisy but it is not so, it seems that almost warms less ..

after many tests I can say something more ':
The new CPU is a beast, of course going up very overclocking it dissipates a lot of heat and I had to add some copper sheets between the heat sink and aluminum keyboard plate, now it can stably support these multipliers under load:
28 for 1 and 2 cores active and 18 for 3 and 4 cores.
I set up: 80w TDP and TDC 84A
the 3d gaming performance are definitely improved, I'm playing battlefield 4 with medium graphics settings at 1920x1080 and is very fluid.
the wei, now is 7.4 for the CPU, the memory 7.5, 6.5 and aero 3D, 7.2 HD
the nvidia card has these clock: 640MHz for the core and 849 for memory
as I use windows just to play, I set that trottlestop, TPFC and Msi Afterburner start with overclocking already 'active at boot.
TPFC should be adjusted wit fan at 64 for temperature above 80C and 90C , at default over 90C the fan go to 128 (bios mode) risking meltdown.
under normal use (ubuntu and battery mode ) the laptop is the same than before, same fan noise and same battery time.
bye

Hi,I have just got my Lenovo W510 with q820m and I will post my test here.I have changed thermal paste becaouse it wasent ever change with Xilence x5.At idle my cpu/gpu temp is 45 C.At browsing temps are GPU 55,CPU 57.When playing Call of duty 4 (promod) at highest setting and native resolution 1600x900 I get 125 fps locked constant.Temp rarely go above 73C.When playing League of legends at 1600x900 highest setting + shadows I get constant 60FPS and temp are not exceding 76C for both cpu and gpu.I am NOT using thinkpad fan control.

Thank you for that photo of keyboard mod for cooling, that's to cut clear tape area and using keyboard's punched holes as bit of more ventilation.
Cheers, thinkpadcollection

adda, I'm trying to understand what you've done here...
Are those thermal pads you've put between the heat sink and the keyboard,
or just some kind of tape?

I think he cut the tape thats already on the keyboard where the heatsink is.Can you see the collor change a the down left corner.

But, if you look in his other pictures, he's got some kind of tape over the CPU heatsink,
as well as the copper parts of the heat sink itself.
Is he trying to make contact between the keyboard and the heat sink?

He's got some kind of black pad or tape directly on the CPU heat sink, not sure what he's trying to do.

Oh,I see, really dont know what that is.I am not overclocking my W510 so I dont need any cooling mode but still playing games, rendering heavy 3d stuff and so on.It could be some good temperature transimotr so when you put your keyboard the metal on the bottom of keayboard is transefring heat to the whole keyboardNot whole but some part.It is designed that there is some air space betwen heatsink and the keyboard so the heat has nowhere to go but when you connect heatsink with keybord heat is spreading and there is larger area for cooling.
