Hello,
I updated BIOS and other drivers, reinstalled system and made sure there was enough disk space/everything was clean but that still doesn't help with my issue : when i put my w520 to (basic) sleep, it will quite often crash in the sense the screen will turn off but not all the rest and pushing power (or fN, or any other) button(s) won't wake it in any ways. I must force shutdown by long pressing power... It doesn't seem to be a software issue, does it?
Thanks.

I wouldn't know why it wouldn't be a software issue.
What BIOS do you have?
But double posting won't help you.

Have you tried putting it to sleep right after a fresh Windows install? Looks to me like some kind of a driver issue.
Same thing happens to me when I close the lid and disconnect the AC power immediately

My T61 crashed when I closed the lid when it was going into sleep. A new motherboard happened to solve that
Yeah; connecting / disconnecting things during a power state change doesn't seem to be liked by Thinkpads in general.

I put it to sleep with fN+F4, closing the lid does nothing with my settings. It doesn't crash the first time, but let's say after i put it to sleep/wake about 2-3 times, the next one will crash. NEVER happens on my X'; i have 3x4GB, one is not from Lenovo, i just removed it to see in case it'd be it...
And it did more stange things

Other things happened in the past (less often though) such as "the connected power supply isn't compatible" or something like that (that part was changed already) so yeah i may better ask for MB replacement, a bit afraid of that though (due to the complexity of the task.. last time the tech mounted some things back in reverse

)..

One of the other issues : when the lid is closed (remember, it's set to take no action) sometimes when i open it up again it seems while it was closed the resolution was down to 640x480 or another small resolutions resulting in all opened windows size being changed, making me insane.. I use Picasa screensaver, it may be related to it however how to fix, i dunno..

Ok it happened without that extra RAM so it's not the culprit... The window even log doesn't seem to help, is there an app i can install that would help (in case this is a software issue)?

This is symptomatic of a motherboard failure.
You will need to replace it.

Today it happened, i waited and it ended with blue scren 0x00009F, looked around and drivers are always mentionned, didn't find any report with mentioning hardware cause.. May i know more about your experience on this?
ADD: I found the app "BlueScreenView" and ntoskrnl.exe is hinted as the crash culprit.. It that can help..

Did you ever do a RAM test?

Windows version 6 or newer has MdSched.exe. But it will not run continually: it will only run a number of passes, and then launch Windows.

Ok i'll do that, do you suggest i do it with all RAM sticks or one by one? How much will it take for 3x4GB? I guess i better not start 1h before bed time (if i want silence)..!

I'm doing it now, i chose "extended" test, two pass. It seems to be running pretty fast, surprising.. EDIT: The extended test is stuck @21%, common issue apparently.. I ran normal test and results are negative. What's next?

If I were you, I would start by installing a (different) OS form a (different) source. If it still happens, then we can be 99,999 % sure it is hardware related.

I'm not planning to use any other system (using 7 always) and i think last time i reinstalled (march 2014) i used a different copy (SP1 integrated). It'd be really nice if Q-Ball could answer/develop.

Get at least a Win7 iso from the MS download, so you can see if it isn't a software issue after all...
But if the problem persists I would try disconnecting everything that can be disconnected. WLAN, fingerprint reader, modem, ... to see if there isn't some device failing other than a motherboard.

This is actually an MSDN ISO..!! Lenovo is ok for replacing, i don't feel safe with it though.

Just so you know, planar replacement didn't solve this specific issue.. Still got to find the culprit.. Any clue welcomed..

That's a Windows driver problem.
Go here:
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm and click on
9F: Driver Power State bottom/left, to check the resulting links.
Install a current Linux, such as Mint 17, and begin to wean yourself off Windows altogether...

Funny...
A lot of programs aren't available in Linux flavor, and if you happen to need such a program, then choice for OS is already made.
