W700/W700DS GPU

#1 Post by Medessec » Thu Nov 13, 2014 2:53 pm

Hello!

I'm raising a call to fellow W700-chassis owners, if you use your machine on any sort of frequent basis... I'm wondering what GPU you have installed: the Quadro FX2700M, or the 3700M? And what your experiences with the GPU are like?

I've ran both GPUs in the W700s I've had in, and I primarily use the 3700M in my W700ds that I use for animation, and my friends use as a spare gaming machine. The 3700M runs everything very nicely but gets absurdly hot, even with the fan on max and good thermal paste, it can top 90C. In the past I've burned out a 3700M before, and had to replace the GPU in the machine.

The 2700M is far less capable but seems to be a more behaved and tame GPU, not running the fan much at all and unless pushed really hard, doesn't exceed 80C. I'm wondering if your experiences match this observation.

If you have a W701-chassis computer, I suppose I can open it up for you to discuss the FX2800M/3800M.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...
