#1 Post by Python.p » Tue Mar 31, 2015 7:24 am

Hi,

i do a research, but only find QC for T61, i think there must be way to have one in W500.

Thanks for any conclusion.

Hi.
The W500 wull not take a QuadCore

It haves the microcode for them (IIRC), but can only boot with "core multi processing" disabled and pin insulation. Tgis will result in a quadcore running with only one core enabled. I cannot confirm this, since i couldn't get it booting at all.
It migth be some missing APIC tables, but im not sure. There is no known fix for this.

The short answer is therefore "no".
Thinkpad W500 (2.53 GHz P8700, 4 GB RAM, FireGL V5700, WUXGA)
Thinkpad T61F 14" (2.53 GHz QX9300, 6 GB RAM, Quadro FX570m 256 MB, SXGA). Advanced dock with AMD Radeon HD7750
Custom build ITX desktop (i5 4590, 8GB RAM, AMD R7 260X, custom watercooling)
Thinkpad 8, Fujitsu F-07C

Yes i have tested this too and haven't succeeded with QC in W500 :( It even can't start with Q9000. These days i thought that the problem in CPU itself. But after a year i have got W700 and this trimmed Q9000 can start and worked well in W700. So the problem is hiding elsewhere.

The story of QC in T61 have made not in a single day. But yes it have done fast. 1066 mod and only after that QC mods (HW and BIOS). T(W)500 is very stubborn. We don't know what is wrong in multicore QC mode. But i believe one day some one can say Eureka!

I believe some have gotten it to work with heavy BIOS modification, as QWERTY Andreas hints at, but it doesn't function properly and even with all cores enabled, the motherboard needs further modification to run it at the normal clock speeds.

The absolute best CPU that WILL boot in a W500 motherboard with NO modification, is the X9100 Core 2 Extreme. This may be a Dual-Core CPU, but it runs at 3.06 GHz. It wasn't an original option on the W500, I don't think any W500s were shipped with it, but I have ran an X9100 in a W500 before. I don't have any long-term experience with it, so I can't tell you for sure how it runs.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

and yes. I am a bit of a lunatic.
