Added a W510 to the collection

#1 Post by MisterB » Sun May 24, 2015 10:42 am

I found a W510, 4319-2PU, on eBay that was complete with 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram for a decent price. I mainly wanted a Thinkpad with a quad core i7 for virtual machines and emulation. I was looking at W510s and W520s and this one came up at much less than I thought I was going to have to spend. I'm quite happy with it so far. I wasn't looking forward to the 16:9 display but this one is big enough not to bother me too much. I can have a couple VMs on it at once in 4:3 ratio. Power consumption is not as bad as I though it would be either. About the equivalent of 1.5 to 2 T60s depending on CPU load but not bad for such a huge beast.
Currently using: A W500, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an X61T, a 14" T60P,a 15" UXGA T60P and a W700.
Currently idle: A spare W500, a spare X61T, a spare W700, a 14" T61, a 15" SXGA+ T60, a 14" T60, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

Just watch the temps if/when you stress it out, and you should be good to go for quite some time.

Thanks George. I've been enjoying this one. I don't think the display is IPS but it has good viewing angles. I did a side by side video test with a T40 and the display was viewable at angles that totally washed out the T40.

I haven't even come close to getting it hot. I had one issue with Virtualbox VMs using too much CPU and that got got the host system to around 50% CPU. That ended up being a problem of the guest system AV and the quad core CPU and now that that's fixed, I'ts running cool. I downloaded Ubuntu yesterday and plan on setting it up to dual boot with Windows 7 so I can try the Virtualbox VMs in a Linux host.

I have a W510 coming today for a vocation-related project. I'd be interested in comparing experiences w/regard to CPU and GPU temperature. I've heard a lot about these machines developing heat problems, and I'd like to compare experiences with other users under W7 and Ubuntu (or Kubuntu, in my case) just to get an idea as to what normal temperature ranges are with this machine.

Please post some info if you get a chance.
Daily Drivers: W520 i7-2860QM | T420 FHD IPS i7-2640m | W701
Others: W510 | T400 | W500 WUXGA | 701C (on its shrine) | R61 14W (in the boneyard)
Non-TP: Dell T7500 (workstation), Dell m7510
Currently Experimenting With: T420s
