W510 Motherboard swap to W520 +

#1 Post by James2406 » Tue Aug 18, 2015 3:30 am

Was just wondering if it's possible to swap a w520 or above motherboard into a w510 in order to use the better GPU. Also if the CPU's used on the w510 motherboards would be compatible with the w520 or above motherboards.

W510 processors are not compatiable with W520, they use different socket.

W530 motherboard can accept W520 processor, but the other way around doesn't work.
W530 motherboard also can't accept a modded bios, and require different keyboard.

The 2 types of machines would have to have identical port alignment and all of the mounting screws
would have to be in the same place. Somehow, I doubt that this is the case.

However, I believe that all of the following are interchangeable:

RAM
Keyboards

In addition, I believe that I have read that someone took the FHD lid from a W510 and
put it on a T520 or W520. Perhaps someone in this forum can provide better information.

In another year W520 machines will probably go for what W510s do today, so I would
just wait if you want to upgrade.
Daily Drivers: W520 i7-2860QM | T420 FHD IPS i7-2640m | W701
Others: W510 | T400 | W500 WUXGA | 701C (on its shrine) | R61 14W (in the boneyard)
Non-TP: Dell T7500 (workstation), Dell m7510
Currently Experimenting With: T420s

My experience installing a W520 board in a W510 chassis is that the W510 chassis is nearly identical. There are some differences where the SATA connector will not fit with a hard drive in the main bay ever so slightly. This one issue left me to abandon the project. Everything else fits ok though.

Lids with FHD or any LCD fit either W510 or W520.

Well [censored]. If it wasn't that serious of a clearance issue I could make it work some how.

Word to the wise...

If Brad couldn't get it to work, it's highly unlikely to be an effort worth one's time and patience...
